Question 1
Find the magnetic flux through the loop shown in the figure.
CHAPTER 28 28-2: Induced EMF and Faraday’s Law

The flux through the loop is changing because magnetic field

strength on surface S is increasing.

An emf is induced in the loop

Emf is the work done per unit charge. This work is

associated with non-conservative electric field (non-
Coulomb electric field).

Question 2
A long, straight wire carrying a current I is next to a
loop, with the straight wire lying in the plane of the
loop. The current I is increasing with time. What is
the direction of the induced current in the loop,
clockwise or counterclockwise as viewed in the
figure? Explain your answer.

Question 10
A conducting rod of length 𝒍 = 𝟑𝟓 𝒄𝒎 is free to slide on two parallel conducting bars as shown
in Figure. Two resistors 𝑹𝟏 = 𝟐 𝛀 and 𝑹𝟐 = 𝟓 𝛀 are connected across the ends of the bars to
form a loop. A constant magnetic field B = 2.50 T is directed perpendicularly into the page. An
external agent pulls the rod to the left with a constant speed of 𝒗 = 𝟖 𝒎/𝒔. Find;

(a) the currents in both resistors,

(b) the total power delivered to the resistor
of the circuit
(c) the magnitude of the applied force that is
needed to move the rod with this constant
velocity.

Question 11
The graph shows the magnetic flux (as function of time) through a square loop of 1 𝑐𝑚
side. The loop is exposed to a magnetic field created by an external source. The magnetic
field is oriented to have an angle of 30⁰ with the plane of the loop.
a. Calculate the value of the magnetic field at 𝑡 = 1 𝑠, 𝑡 = 3 𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡 = 5 𝑠
b. Calculate the value of the induced emf in the loop between:
i. 𝑡 = 0 𝑠 and 𝑡 = 2 𝑠
ii. 𝑡 = 2 𝑠 and 𝑡 = 4 𝑠
iii. 𝑡 = 4 𝑠 and 𝑡 = 6 𝑠
c. What is the value of the induced current in the loop between 𝑡 = 2 𝑠 and 𝑡 = 4 𝑠?
Explain your answer.
