Barangay Bajumpandan is situated at approximately 9.2796, 123.2876, in the

island of Negros. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 29.7 meters or 97.4 feet

above mean sea level.

PART II: HOW THE BARANGAY GOT ITS NAME

The word “Bajumpandan” literally mean the odor of Pandan, a tropical plant

belonging to the pandanus species. This plant is growing wild in the Philippine forests.

The economic value of the plant is the use of the leaves for weaving mats, and other

articles using the same materials. There is a variety which has a peculiar pleasing odor of

the green leaves. The leaves, of this particular variety when used as matima at the bottom

of the pot in the process of cooking rice give the boiled rice a very pleasing odor and

aroma. Although, this is not used ordinarily in every home, yet, it is a very sweet aroma

highly increases the appetite of the people. Hence, the use of this appetizer is another sign

of our hospitality which aims to give the fullest satisfaction to our guests. There are some

well- to-do families, who keep a supply or culture of this aromatic variety of pandan for

daily use in the cooking of rice.

As to how the word “Bajumpandan” became the name of the barrio, the story

revealed that during the organization and establishment of the barrio some prominent

visitors, possibly Spaniards, noted some people with “pandan” leaves and were habitually

in the art of smelling the leaves.

PART III: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE BARANGAY

Throughout my interview with the current and present barangay captain, Hon.

Crispin V. Patrimonio, I was able to know the allocated budget for the barangay, current

available data for the population, and some features of the barangay for example the

puroks, housings and more.

According to the Hon. Crispin and the secretary of the barangay, the allocated

budget is PHP 6, 711, 000. This will be divided to the programs available programs in the

barangay like Sangguniang Kabataan, Honorariums, Sports (if applicable), Health

programs or Disaster Risk Reduction programs and more.

Barangay Bajumpandan had 1337 families with 1337 household and a total

population of 6686 as of 2018 (source: PSA) excluding the children among them are

3686 female and 3000 male.

Barangay Bajumpandan consists 6 puroks namely Purok Katubhan, Purok

Kamaisan, Purok Kasagingan, Purok Kanangkaan, Purok Kalubihan, and Purok

Kawayanan. In addition, the barangay also has 9 different housing particularly Habitats 1,

2, 3 and 4, Karitas 1 and 2, IHome, Core Shelter, and Gawad Kalinga.

With regards to the other features like how many churches and schools the

barangay have, unfortunately they don’t have any accurate data for it. However, Hon.

Crispin told me that within the premises of the barangay Bajumpandan it has one of the

known schools
in Negros which is Negros Oriental State University Main Campus II. Criminals may find

themselves also there as the barangay is home to the Dumaguete City Jail. Aside from

that, located in the Barangay is the City Slaughterhouse.

As stated by the barangay secretary, Miss Marilen Cataylo, they don’t have an

updated organizational chart or frame of the barangay however they have provided me a

printed copy of their current and present barangay officials. These are the following

barangay officials: Hon. Crispin V. Patrimonio – Barangay Chairman, Hon. Esmail P.

Rasid, Hon. Reu D. Ismil, Hon. Virginia D. Almayda, Hon. Felomino A. Solamillo, Hon.

Juancho R. Gallarde, Hon. Noelito C. Ramirez, Hon. Jeffrey B. Intong – Barangay

Councilor, Hon. Bryan L. Panday – SK Chairperson, Mrs. Josephine P. Quisquis –

Barangay Treasurer, and Miss Marilen B. Cataylo – Barangay Secretary.
