This study aims to examine the impact of students' attitudes towards statistics on their academic performance in statistics courses at Benguet State University. Specifically, it seeks to understand students' current attitudes, identify principal components of attitudes, determine if attitudes differ based on course, year, age, gender or math performance, and analyze the contribution of attitudes to statistics performance. The study will survey students enrolled in a statistics course using a validated attitude questionnaire, and use statistical analysis techniques like principal component analysis, t-tests, ANOVA and regression to analyze the data.

Benguet State University, many of the students had low grades, became drop-outs and even failed on the said subject. A big count of students takes the subject twice and even more than twice. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Earlier researches had identified cognitive and demographic factors affecting student performance in statistics subjects including gender, prior knowledge, mathematical ability, spatial ability, and pedagogical approaches. However, affective and attitudinal factors among students should also be taken into consideration by instructors teaching statistics. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In recent years, attitude towards
statistics have received increasing attention in statistics education. Student attitudes toward statistics are important because they may be related to the learning process. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY However, there are few researches on attitude towards statistics affecting academic performance especially at Benguet State University. Thus, this study aims to examine the impact of attitude towards statistics on the performance in Statistics of students in Benguet State University. It also aims to show the use of principal component analysis in data reduction which is used as a prior statistical technique before conducting further statistical analysis. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Attitude assessment can be used to provide information to students and instructors. The result of this study may benefit the students for they will become aware on the effects of their attitude towards statistics on their learning process and performance in the said subject. Knowing the effects, they may be able to adjust in order to be successful. Furthermore, attitude information can specifically be used to identify students who are potentially at risk for failing the statistics subject. Such identification may be the primary step in assisting them to become successful. Understanding student attitudes toward statistics can also assist in creating an individualized intervention strategy to help remove some of the anxiety for a specific student. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM 1. What is the attitude towards statistics of the students at Benguet State University? 2. What are the principal components of the attitude towards statistics of the students at Benguet State University? 3. Is there a significant difference in the attitude towards statistics of the students in terms of their: Course? Year level? Age? Gender? Performance in Math? 4. What is the contribution of the students’ attitude towards statistics to the performance in Statistics of the students? POPULATION AND LOCALE OF THE STUDY This study will be conducted at Benguet State University main campus located at La Trinidad, Benguet. The target population would be all the students enrolled in Statistics 11 on the 1st semester of school year 2015-2016. Cluster sampling will be utilized to select the respondents of the study. DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT A survey questionnaire will be administered to the respondents. It will be a statistics attitude survey adopted from Survey on Attitude towards Statistics-36 by Schau et al., 1995. and Schau, 2003, SATS-28 by Schau, 1999, and ATS by Wise, 1985. The constructed survey questionnaire will be referred to experts in the field to check its validity. To establish the reliability of the research instrument, the test will be administered to several students who were not enrolled in the class that is subjected to the study. Cronbach reliability will be used to determine the internal consistency of the instruments. TREATMENT OF DATA The data to be gathered will be treated and analyzed using SPSS software ( Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences). Principal Component Analysis will be utilized to group the items on attitude towards statistics survey questionnaire. T-test and analysis of variance will be utilized to determine if there are significant differences on the attitude towards statistics of the respondents with respect to their course, year level, age, gender, and performance in Math. Multiple regression analysis will be employed to determine the contribution of the respondent’s attitude towards statistics to their performance in Statistics.
