Section 2: Essay Question

On a separate piece of paper answer the following question:
-How are Confucianism and Taoism and similar and different? Compare and contrast each ancient
philosophy. Explain how Confucianism and Daoism influenced Ancient China’s civilization.

Example:

Confucianism and Daoism are two of the most influential and well-known schools of thought
from ancient China. Both are not only ways of thinking, but ways of life. However, they are not
religions. They have no teaching of worship of gods, or the afterlife. Instead, each philosophy focuses
on the individual and their behavior. While Confucianism and Daoism are similar, they are also very
different in their ways of thinking about the universe and human behavior.

At the center of Confucianism are morality, ethics, and activism. Developed by Confucius, a
great thinker, his philosophy encourages social harmony and mutual respect. Followers of Confucius
sought to perfect their character by living a virtuous life and seeking goodness. They valued ethics,
respect for elders, and propriety. Confucius also believed political order would be found by the
proper ordering of human relationships. He did not focus on the structure of the state. Confucius
valued education and thought that government should be run by well-educated people.

However, Daoism is different from Confucianism. Daoism focused on self-reflection and one’s
way of being. Daoists focused on themselves more than focusing on activism like Confucius thinkers
did. They devoted their energy to introspection, in hopes that they could better understand the natural
principles of the world. The main concept of Daoism is the way of nature. Daoists strive to live one in
harmony with nature. This philosophy discouraged the presence of any government or empires.
Instead, people should live in just small self-sufficient communities.

Confucianism and Daoism are similar in that they were both created as a solution for the
chaos that emerged from the fall of the Zhou Dynasty. Although the arrival of legalism created unity
in China, Confucianism and Daoism were still very influential schools of thought. They both focus on
self-improvement and reflect the development of Ancient China’s civilizations. By focusing on one’s
way of being or relationships with others, these two schools of thought demonstrate the intricate
workings of Ancient China’s civilizations and interactions with each other and with the environment.
The Ancient Chinese were aware of their surroundings and their way of being in the universe.

Explanation for this Product:

I chose to create a test because I wanted to have the practice of creating a test on my own.
Also, by creating a test, the product helped be to understand the information better and to retain what
I have studied through this holes and goals project. I structured the test by having twenty multiple
choice questions and one essay question to be completed in a forty-five minute class. I am aware that
the students’ essays will be shorter and also not as elaborated as mine is above as the example, but I
wanted to include the main points that should be touched upon somewhere in their answers.
Confucianism and Daoism are major schools of thought that are important to the study of Ancient
China, which is why I wanted to include those two topics in an essay question.
