Grinding Away
Valley County Weed Control had a crew from Helena
come to Glasgow on Wednesday. They are with the
Montana Department of Agriculture Pesticide and
Herbicide Container Recycling Program. These
chemical jugs are run through a grinder, bagged
up and sent off for recycling. “We have three sites
in the county to collect jugs,” says Landon Holte,
Valley County Weed Coordinator, “and it’s a pretty
good success here from our agriculture community.”
In fact, around 3,000 pounds were pulverized
yesterday. Once 40,000 pounds of shredded plastic
is collected around the state, it is then is shipped

facility to be washed, re-melted into pellets and
recycled into non-consumer products such as field
drain pipe, roadway speed bumps,and landscape
edging. The Pesticide Container Recycling Program
was created to keep pesticide container plastic out
of Montana’s landfills. The program has collected
approximately 607,600 pounds of pesticide
container since the beginning of the program in
October 2009. Whoops — that number has to be over
610,000 pounds now as Valley County ag producers
just added about 3,000 pounds to the total!

It’s a weekend sweep

Weekend sweep 101. Volleyball class is in
session. At least the opponents that face Glasgow will
be learning something about the sport of volleyball.
The Scotties (2-1, 2-0) made it a weekend sweep
Saturday when they took three games from Harlem,
25-11, 25-13, 25-16. Glasgow also won Thursday
night in Malta taking three from the M-ettes 25-18,
25-19, 25-18.
The Scotties hope their volleyball lessons
continue this weekend as they get a rematch with
Class C power Plentywood Friday. The Wildcats
won the first meeting in five sets two weeks ago. The
Scotties also travel to Poplar Saturday for another
District 2B contest.
Glasgow coach Somer Hoerster felt that her
squad could have won the match against Plentywood
as her Scotties held a lead in the first game before
losing the set. The Scotties did come back to win the
second set and also the fourth. But it was the fifth
game she was surprised with as Plentywood served
15 straight points to win the set and match.
The Scotties will need to play their game, said
Hoerster.
“We’re going to have to play very well,” said
Hoerster. “Everybody will have to do their job. We
will have to serve aggressively and we’re going to
have to run our offense. So that means we’re going
to have to pass so that we have options in the front
row all of the time.”
Hoerster’s main concern is everyone’s health as
she had one senior out of the line up for the weekend
contests.
“And show up with some fire and ready to play,”
she added.
Hoerster doesn’t like seeing matches going to
five sets unless it’s needed to win the match.
“We need to manage our score better,” she said.
Hoerster doesn’t know much about Poplar,
except that the Indians graduated their big girl that
caused so many problems while playing in the front
row.
“I’m not a hundred percent sure what to expect
out of Poplar,” she said. “We haven’t been to any of
the same places we have been as far as tournaments
or anything. As long as we serve and pass we should
be fine. We have to get our serves in and pass the ball
and if that’s working then I feel good with whoever
we are playing.”
Glasgow recorded 17 kills, 31 digs, eight blocks,
19 digs aces and 14 assists in the match with Harlem.
“We served pretty well and did what we needed
to to get out in three games,” said Hoerster on the
two sweeps. “I was happy with that.”
Klaire Krumweide paced the Scotties with six
aces, five kills and a block. Blaire Westby had seven
digs and Daley Aune eight assists.
Vanise Little led the Wildcats with seven kills
and seven assists and Jessica King had 10 digs and
five blocks.
The trick waa winning a match on the Malta
floor, but the Scotties enjoy playing in the Malta
gym.
“We always seem to play pretty decently in the
Malta gym,” said Hoerster. “We have other gyms
that we seem to struggle in. The kids played well
and some of my younger kids got some playing time
and did well. That’s always a plus.”
Hoerster was able to play some of her junior
varsity players in both matches, especially with two
seniors not feeling well.
I had to play several of my JV kids so we had
enough players,” said Hoerster. “I was really happy
with how well they did.”
Hoerster said that the junior varsity is talented
as well. The Scotties didn’t play well against Malta,
losing the match in five sets.
“It’s just because they didn’t play well in the last
game,” said Hoerster.
Hoerster gave her players Monday off so they
could get some extra rest. She hopes that they are
ready to go this Friday in Plentywood.

Elk shoulder seasons provide the ability to harvest
more antlerless elk. Several hunting districts remain
above population objective even with late shoulder
seasons. The extension of the late season is intended to
increase antlerless harvest or alter elk distributions. The
extension applies to all elk licenses and permits valid
for shoulder seasons in these hunting districts except in
HD 314.

confiscated by Montana
Fish, Wildlife & Parks
enforcement will be
auctioned on Sept. 25
at the National Auction
House in Billings, located
at 3625 South 56th Street
West. Items include 50
big horn sheep skulls,
390-plus-inch bull elk,
moose, deer, elk, bear,
mountain goats, mountain
lions, martins, antelope,
bobcats and more.
Most of the items
come from poaching
incidents. Montana
statute requires FWP to
sell seized items at public
auction. This includes all
birds, animals, fish, heads,
hides, teeth or other parts
of any animal other than
a grizzly bear. When a
carcass is confiscated,
FWP donates the meat to
a charitable organization
and removes the antlers to
be sold at auction.
When enough
inventory is collected,
FWP schedules an
auction. The last auction
was held in 2017.
“It’s a time-
consuming process and
requires a lot of logistics,
so we try to wait until
we have enough items to
warrant the auction,” said
FWP Law Enforcement
Chief Dave Loewen.
