There was a pair of football games taking place
Saturday afternoon in Glasgow as the Scotties
hosted Shepherd in their season opener, and
there was some hot action at halftime as Glasgow
Police Officer Norman Dick was having a ball with
the quarterback duties for some younger Scotties
who will most likely be playing in the Glasgow
Recreation Department’s Youth Football League.

The State C returned to Glasgow High School for
the second time in three seasons and all from Opheim

in 2001. His boys earned the state third-
place trophy on two occasions. In those
12 seasons the Bengals didn’t qualify for
the state tourney only once.
During the dozen-year span Keller
won eight Western AA Divisional
Tournament championships, including
seven in a row, and only once did not
qualify for the State AA Tournament.
His record as head coach for the
Helena boys was 201-73 (.733), trailing
only Lloyd Skor (275-154, .641) and
Edwin Thomas (214-97, .688).
The only time Keller captured a
state title throughout his prep coaching
career with the boys was in 1991 when he
was an assistant coach with the Bengals,
who defeated Flathead 65-55 in the 1991
chipper.
If one didn’t notice, Keller was the
head coach of the Helena girls’ and boys’
programs for four consecutive seasons
from the late summer/fall of 1997 to the
late winter of 2001.
Keller’s combined record as the head
coach of the Helena girls and boys is 414-
145 (.740).
One very interesting aspect of his
time with the Helena Bengals was when
he had knee surgery on his Anterior
Cruciate Ligament during the Christmas
break with the boys and wound up
coaching on crutches for a while before St. Marie Women’s Club
switching over to a wheelchair on the
sidelines.

Also in 2020 he was named one of the
Top 50 most impactful men’s basketball
head coaches across the nation from the
NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.
“I’m quite honored to be in that elite
company,” Keller said at the time.
In 2021 the Argos went 17-3 (15-
2 conference). His 3-season record in
Great Falls is 59-23 (.719) with a 36-16
(.692) mark against Frontier Conference
opponents.
Keller is entering his 43rd year of
coaching (MHSA, NAIA) later this year.
When taking his 610-180 (.722) overall
high school record at Opheim and
Helena, his 231-124 (.650) mark at
Montana-Western and 59-23 (.719)
showing at Providence, it comes to 900-
327 (.733).

Keller and his wife, Mary Kay,
have two sons. Wes is the head women’s
basketball coach at Rocky Mountain
College and Josh is the head girls’ and
boys’ basketball coach at Twin Bridges
High School in Montana’s southwest
sector.
Both Wes and Josh earned their
degrees from Montana Western and
played basketball for the Bulldogs under
coach Durham. Steve and Mary Kay
also have three daughters: Shandi, who
recently completed 11 years of service in
the U.S. Army as a Blackhawk helicopter
pilot and is now flying choppers in the
private sector; Hayley, a kindergarten
teacher in Montana City, and Nicole,
a junior at MSU-Billings. They are the
proud grandparents of twins Hayden
and Tucker (10), Cassie (7), Kansas (5)
and Neisa (2).
As the June 11 interview with the
Daniels County Leader in the Golden
Dome in Sheridan was winding down,
Keller was listing the names of his
children. He listed Shandi last and his
final words of the interview were, “and
she’s the best one of the bunch.”
When it comes to coaching hoops in
Montana at any level, Steve Keller is right
up there as one of the best of the bunch!
