SUBJECT: General Science Topic: Some properties of water

NOTE-BOOK-WORK

Q1)Write “T” if the statement is true and “F” if the statement

is false in the box:
1) We need water only for drinking purpose. -False
2) Common salt does not dissolve in water.-False
3) Stirring helps in dissolving a solid faster. -True
4) A plastic ball will sink in water. –False

Q2) Define the following term:

a) Solution-

Ans: A solution is a mixture in which a solute dissolves in the

solvent at a particular temperature.

Q3) Distinguish between the following:

1)Solute and Solvent

solute to form a solution with it.
2)Soluble substances and Insoluble substances.

water are called soluble dissolve in water are called

Q4) Why is sand said to be insoluble?

Ans: Sand is not soluble in water. When sand is mixed into water, the
grains of sand will remain suspended in the water.

Q5) Why water is called a universal solvent?

Ans: Water is called the "universal solvent" because it is capable of

dissolving more substances than any other liquid.

Q6) What conditions help in the making of a solution?

Ans: Following are the conditions necessary for making a solution:

1-The solution can be formed in less time, if the solvent is warmed.

2-The solution can be formed quickly, if the solute is stirred in the

solvent.

3-The solute in powdered form or when broken into smaller pieces or

particles, dissolves faster in the solvent.

4-The quantity of a solvent can also be increased in order to make

the solution quickly.

Q7) Think and answer:

You may have made a cold window “cloudy” by breathing on it

and then drew pictures with your finger. Where do you think
that cloudiness comes from?
Ans: Cold air causes the warm moisture in our breath to condense into
tiny droplets of water that appear like a small, misty cloud.
