First Session Lecture: 75 minutes
Objectives:
The objectives of this lecture are:
 To apply sociology’s macro-level theoretical approaches and the process of social construction of
reality in the making of culture, class, and gender in order to better understand our way of life.
 Understand how values and beliefs differ from norms
 Explain the significance of symbols and language to a culture

 Basic Components such as language, values, norms, mores, taboos and laws
 Cultural diversity and cultural change
 Theories of culture
 Ways of looking at culture
