LISTENING PORTFOLIO
1. DESCRIPTION
- Each week (week 2-11), you are required to do 1 test on
https://ieltsonlinetests.com/ and do a listening reflection on it.
- Each listening reflection includes:
 The screenshot results of the whole test you did
 The reflection about what you learned from doing Sections 3 & 4 of
the test
- Each completed reflection are then submitted to Microsoft Teams Class.
- By the end of the course (week 13), students have to submit the listening
reflection portfolio which is the collection of these weekly listening
reflections.

SECTION 1
New words/phrases:
- Health clinic /helθ /ˈklɪn.ɪk/ (n): phòng khám
- Painkiller /ˈpeɪnˌkɪl.ə r / (n): thuốc giảm đau

- On regular basis = regularly

- apart from = except
Traps:
Trap 1: I started off as a waitress.....I'm a manager now
Trap 2: It’s been worse since the last couple of days but it’s 3 weeks since I first noticed it
Trap 3: I sometimes go swimming but usually just when I’m on vacation,
Normally I go running
Paraphrases:
- when it began = how long you have been aware of this
- Regularly = normally
- Injured = hurt
- I take vitamins but that’s all  no medications apart from vitamins
What I’ve learnt from my mistakes:
Notice of the plural forms of nouns
SECTION 2
New words/phrases:
- a bit run down: bị hư hỏng
- take over: tiếp quản
- historical figures: nhân vật quan trọng trong lịch sử
Traps:
- rather than (=instead of) repair the guest room they'd make a new house
Paraphrases:
- make a new house = a new building was constructed
- take over by = be sold to
- a company who owned a number of amusement park = entertainment company
- models of historical figures moving and talking = life-like moving wax models dressing
costume of different periods in the past
- Nowadays, it’s a public display of paintings and sculptures = art exhibition
What I’ve learnt from my mistakes:
- luxurious / lʌgˈʒʊə.ri.əs/ (the word you mispronounced)
- go past the bridge: đi ngang qua cầu (không đi lên cầu)
- go over the bridge: đi lên cầu và qua cầu (learn from word choice)
- pay attention to tenses
In the castle park, visitors can……… can : present tense (learn from grammar)
SECTION 3
New words/phrases:
- muddled /ˈmʌd.l ̩d/ (adj) = badly organized
- overrun = continue past an intended limit, especially a finishing time or a cost
Paraphrases:
- let’s go with the last suggestion  timeline
- what was surprising (tone) –…..much recent than that, so this is really amazing
- the island got cut off from the mainland…….mammonth can’t escape = got isolated
on the island
- precise (time) = exact
- write down all the ideas = make detailed notes
- introduction – how we begin the presentation
- get in touch = contact
- ask the audience to suggest questions = make it more interactive
- it should follow chronological order = organize (the content more clearly)
- make sure it won’t overrun = check timing
- give your own viewpoint = add personal opinions

- rites = ceremonies

- be of importance = be important
Paraphrases:
- rites such as dances = dances and other ceremonies
- phenomena such as clouds = clouds and other phenomena
- their survival depended on it = to ensure the survival
- a calendar which divides the years into festivals = a calendar made up of festivals
- see the needs for instruments = recognize the value of instruments
- discovered that Storms travel from…to.. = identified the movement of storms
