Effects of Online Games to High School Students

Romeo Paolo Esquillo’s “The Digital Boom or… Bane?” states the effects of online

games to high school students. Technology has brought gaming to another level where it can

now be played online everywhere and anywhere. However, if played without moderation, online

gaming can have a negative impact on the high school student’s personality. Connectivity issues,

technical problems, trash talk, and trolls are factors that makes them irascible, emotionally

unstable, and more aggressive. They also tend to have an unhealthy lifestyle by not taking care of

their hygiene, not eating well, and not getting enough sleep just for the sake of online gaming.

Furthermore, online gaming makes it impossible to study or engage in productive tasks.

They spend most of their time playing rather than studying or doing productive activities. They

focus too much on their online games and don’t pay much attention on their studies which is

more important. Also, the more they play games the lesser they become productive because their

ideas are solely focused on online gaming.

Lastly, online gaming poses a threat to the social life of high school students. They treat

online games as their world and are disconnected from reality. They don’t spend enough time to

communicate and interact with their friends and family. Online gaming brainwashes them to

unconsciously have an unhealthy social life.

This raises concerns for the future of our country because these are the same people who

will lead us when they reach adulthood. We don’t want leaders who are online games-influenced

to lead our country. We need those who are academically qualified and are productive.

To combat this, laws prohibiting the establishment of computer businesses near schools

should strictly be enforced. Students are most likely to go to computer shops even during school

days if there school is near a computer shop. Not only does this tempts students but it gives them

more opportunities to go to the computer shop and play online games.

Parents should also strive to monitor their children’s activities and give them wholesome

and educational activities. Learning starts at home so it is also the role of the parents to discipline

their children and save them from the negative effects of online gaming. Instead, they should

give them activities which enhances productivity and explores their passion.
We, high school students should also do our part and use our time and strength into

productive endeavors. We are still young and still continuing to grow so we should not let

excessive online gaming to hinder our development. We should use our time wisely in doing

productive activities and academic work.

These simple efforts may seem small but they are sufficient enough to have a clear vision

to a brighter future as we develop an ethic that is driven towards productivity. The effects of

online gaming to high school students aren’t all bad however its negative effects still outweighs

its benefits. With these solutions, we can be assured that our high school students are in the right

track.
