FIRST QUARTER
WEEK 2

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Brief Introduction This module contains information and suggested activities in maintaining
and repairing electronically controlled domestic appliances. In addition, knowledge on Personal
Protective Equipment is necessary to carry out any given task.

Learning Competencies
LO 1. Prepare to assemble electronic products.
1.2 Follow established risk control measures for work preparation.
Code: TLE_IAEPAS9-12AEP-Iva-27

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
1. Define Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Identify appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for maintaining and repairing
electronically controlled appliances; and
3. Appreciate the importance of protection.

Learning Competency to be Developed

Follow established risk control measures for work preparation.

Let’s Recall

Let’s Understand
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It can
include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear
and safety harnesses. It also includes respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
Why is PPE important?
Making the workplace safe includes providing instructions, procedures, training, and
supervision to encourage people to work safely and responsibly.
Even where engineering controls and safe systems of work have been applied, some hazards
might remain. These include injuries to:
● the lungs, e.g., from breathing in contaminated air

● the head and feet, e.g., from falling materials

● the eyes, e.g., from flying particles or splashes of corrosive liquids
● the skin, e.g., from contact with corrosive materials3

● the body, e.g., from extremes of heat or cold

PPE is needed in these cases to reduce the risk.

The purpose of personal protective equipment is to reduce employee exposure to hazards

when engineering controls and administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these
risks to acceptable levels. PPE is needed when there are hazards present. PPE has the serious
limitation that it does not eliminate the hazard at the source and may result in employees being
exposed to the hazard if the equipment fails.
I. Eyes
Hazards:
Chemical or metal splash, dust, projectiles, gas and vapors, radiation
Options: Safety spectacles, goggles, face screens, face shields, visors
II. Head and neck
Hazards:
Impact from falling or flying objects, risk of head bumping, hair getting
tangled in machinery, chemical drips or splash, climate, or temperature
Options: Industrial safety helmets, bump caps, hairnets, and firefighters'
helmets
III. Ears
Hazards:
Noise – a combination of sound level and duration of exposure, very high-
level sounds are a hazard even with short duration
Options: Earplugs, earmuffs, semi-insert/canal caps
IV. Hands and arms
Hazards:
Abrasion, temperature extremes, cuts and punctures, impact, chemicals, electric
shock, radiation, vibration, biological agents, and prolonged immersion in water
Options: Gloves, gloves with a cuff, gauntlets and sleeving that covers part
or all the arm
V. Feet and legs
Hazards:
Wet, hot, and cold conditions, electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and
punctures, falling objects, heavy loads, metal, and chemical splash.
Options: Safety boots and shoes with protective toe caps and penetration-
resistant, mid-sole wellington boots and specific footwear, e.g., foundry boots and
chainsaw boots
VI. Lungs
Hazards:
Oxygen-deficient atmospheres, dusts, gases, and vapors Options:
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
VII. Whole body
Hazards:
Heat, chemical or metal splash, spray from pressure leaks or spray guns,
contaminated dust, impact or penetration, excessive wear, or entanglement of own
clothing
Options: Conventional or disposable overalls, boiler suits, aprons, chemical
suits.

Let’s Apply
Directions: Match column A with column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on
a separate sheet of paper.
Column A Column B

1. protects against extremes of heat and cold

a.
2. protects from breathing contaminated air

True or False
Directions: Write the word “true” if the statement is correct, and “false” if the
statement is incorrect.
___1. A combination of sound level and duration of exposure, very high-level sounds
are a hazard even with short duration of the ear.
___2. Oxygen-deficient atmospheres, dusts, gases, and vapors are associated with
hazards of the lungs.
___3. Chemical or metal splash, dust, projectiles, gas and vapor, radiation are
hazards that affect eyes.
___4. Abrasion, temperature extremes, cuts and punctures, impact, chemicals,
electric shock, radiation, vibration, biological agents, and prolonged immersion in
water affects hands and arms.
___5. Wet, hot, and cold conditions, electrostatic build-up, slipping, cuts and
punctures, falling objects, heavy loads, metal and chemical splash, vehicles affect
the feet and legs.

Enrichment activity:
Directions: Re-draw the pictures of PPE and place it on the boy to protect him.

Let’s Create

Goal
To be acquainted with the necessary PPE while in the workplace.

Role
Create a Protected Man.

Audience
Grade ten learners taking E.P.A.S.

Situation
You are in a position where “risks” and “hazards” are everywhere. How can
you protect yourself?

THE PROTECTED MAN

Directions: Identify the following PPE.
Product Performance
The learner shall be able to service consumer electronics products and
systems (products with electric motors) with complete personal protective
equipment.

Standards
The learner demonstrates an understanding of concepts and underlying
principles in servicing consumer electronic products and systems with complete
personal protective equipment.
