MUSCULAR SYSTEM NOTES 2.

Smooth muscle

Structural Function
1. Contractility – contract
2. Excitability – capacity of the muscle to respond
to stimuli
3. Extensibility – stretching of the muscle
4. Elasticity – go back/recoil to its original position
Different Types of Muscle Tissue 3. Cardiac muscle

1. Skeletal muscle
Skeletal Muscular Structure

A & I Bond – where muscle contraction happens

Membrane/Sheath found:
1. Epimysium/muscular facia – larger bundles the
entire muscle fiber
2. Perimysium – encapsulate the muscle fascicle
(smaller bundle of muscle fibers)
3. Endomysium – surrounds each muscle fiber

 Sarcoplasm – gel-like fluid found in muscle

fiber; needed to do muscle contractions
 Sarcolemma – cell membrane itself for the
muscle fiber; engulfs the entire cell
 Myofibril – proteins
o Actin & Myosin myofilament
 Transverse tubule – extra cellular fluid and
other materials that can penetrate
 Sarcoplasmic reticulum – similar to
endoplasmic reticulum
 Mitochondria – for generating energy for the
muscle
