INTRODUCTION TO BS
SOLIDWORKS
WHAT IS SOLID WORKS ?
SOLIDWORKS was developed by MIT graduate Jon
Hirsch tick and was bought by Dassault Systems in
1997. The software now encompasses a number of
programs that can be used for both 2D and 3D design.
SOLIDWORKS is used to develop mechatronics
systems from beginning to end. At the initial stage, the
software is used for planning, visual ideation,
modelling, feasibility assessment, prototyping, and
project management. The software is then used for
design and building of mechanical, electrical, and
software elements. Finally, the software can be used for
management, including device management, analytics,
data automation, and cloud services.

The SOLIDWORKS software solutions are used by

mechanical, electrical, and electronics engineers to
form a connected design. The suite of programs is
aimed at keeping all engineers in communication and
able to respond to design needs or changes.

LAB # 01
Lab # 01 Introduction to
SOLIDWORK CAD.

INTRODUCTION :-
In this lab we were given tutorial on how to use solid works
and learned the features of “Extruded Boss/Base” ,
“Extruded cut” , “ chamfer, fillet ” etc.

USES OF SOME FEATURES:-

The first feature you create in a part is the base. This
feature is the basis on which you create the other features.
The base feature can be an extrusion, a revolve, a sweep, a
loft, thickening of a surface, or a sheet metal flange.
However, most base features are extrusions. The following
are some of the features you can use to make parts in
SolidWorks.
 Extrude - Extrude creates a feature by extruding a 3D
object from a 2D sketch, essentially adding the third
dimension. An extrusion can be a base (in which case it
always adds material), a boss (which adds material, often
on another extrusion), or a cut (which removes material).
 Revolve - Revolve creates a feature that adds or
removes material by revolving one or more sketch
profiles around a centreline. The feature can be either a
solid, a thin feature, or a surface.
 Loft - Loft creates a feature by making transitions
between profiles. A loft can be a base, boss, cut, or
surface.
 Sweep - Sweep creates a base, boss, cut, or surface by
moving a profile (section) along a path.
 Boundary - Boundary creates very high quality,
accurate features useful for creating complex shapes for
the consumer product design, medical, aerospace, and
mold markets. A boundary can be a base, boss, cut, or
surface.
SolidWorks features are of two types: sketched and applied.
 Sketched features such as extrusions, revolves, sweeps,
and lofts are based on sketch geometry.
 Applied features such as chamfers, fillets, and shells
are applied directly to the model.

MAKING A SIMPLE PART:-

Now that we have learned some basic features lets make
simple part.
STEPS OF CONSTRUCTION:
First open solid works, after that make sure your units
are set to MMGS(millimetre, gram, seconds) from the
bottom right corner.
Now select desired plane ,say a front plane and after
that click on “sketch” and then select “centre
rectangle” and draw a square of desired dimensions.
We can also set the dimensions from “smart dimension”
option by selecting part to set dimension.
Now select “features” and then “Extruded Boss/Base.”
In left window we can edit the feature like from where
the feature begins(from sketch plane, vertex or selected
face) and where it ends(Blind, Midplane, etc.).
Now set the depth of feature lets say 50mm. It will draw
a cube of depth 50mm from a square.
Now we chose front plane again and draw a circle on
the front face of cube, then we again select “feature”
and this time “Extruded cut” to make a hole of desired
depth in that face or cutting a hole through the whole
cube by editing the feature in left window.
After that we can fillet the sides of cube and making
smooth sides of cube from “fillet” feature.

it through all.
 Now draw a circle of dia 18mm on face of first
extruded rectangle at a distance 25mm from top and
19mm from left edge and mirror the circle along
centre line drawn from origin so that similar circle is
drawn on the other end and finally “Extrude cut”
both circles cutting a hole through all.
 Now repeat the similar procedure on the face of
second extruded boss rectangle.
 Select right plane and draw a line from bottom of
first extruded boss/base circle to the lower
rectangular face and then use “Rib” feature on that
line of depth 15mm.
 In the end “Fillet” the edges to be fillet of dia

LAB # 05
LAB # 05 DESIGN A ENGINE
BLOCK:-

INTRODUCTION:-
To design a engine block of given dimensions.

STEPS OF CONSTUCTION:-
 Select front plane and draw the following shape
of given dimensions and“Extrude

Boss/Base”it480mm.
 Now on the 480 X 165mm face, sketch a
centreline and then sketch three circles of dia
127mm on that centre line with equal spacing and
then Extrude cut all circles through all.
 Sketch three circles of Dia 150mm from the
origin of last three circles. Sketch an Offset entities
of 8mm parameters. Sketch a construction circle of
185mm Dia from the origin of first circle and then
sketch two perpendicular construction lines from
the same origin. Sketch a 25mm Dia circle at the
circumference of the construction circle which
should be between the two perpendicular
construction lines.
 Now use mirror entities on the smaller circle
about the per. Construction lines so that four
circles are formed on the construction circle and
then extruded cut all four circles through all and
put rib using “Rib” command on the extruded
circle.

 Sketch three lines 120 degree apart on the two

mm Dia circles and then Cut extrude the 120mm
at blind.
 In the feature tab, select Mirror and use front
plane as the mirror plane, select Ribs and
Extruded cut circles as features to mirror,
following part will be formed.

 Use fillet on the outside edges of 14mm radius

and then sketch and then sketch a rectangle of
150x120mm dimensions on the side of the
480x160mm rectangle and then extruded cut it
5mm blind and also use fillet of 14mm on the
edges of the Extruded cut.
 Repeat the above process on the other side of
the 480x165mm rectangle.
 This is the first half of the ENGINE BLOCK to
make the other half by mirroring it about the right
plane.
 Hence we have the desired ENGINE BLOCK.

LAB # 06 DESIGN A T- TYPE

JOINT.
INTRODUCTION :-
In this lab we will design a T-Type joint.

USES OF T-TYPE JOINTS :-

Tee type fitting is a component of plumbing system which is
in T-shape. It is having one inlet and two outlets, outlets are
arranged at 90o to the main line connection (inlet). It can
also be used to combine the flow from two inlets to one
outlet.

STEPS OF CONSTRUCTION:
First open solid works, after that make sure your units
are set to MMGS(millimetre, gram, seconds) from the
bottom right corner.
Now select desired plane ,say a front plane and after
that click on “sketch” and then select “Circle” of
desired dimension in this case we draw it of 50mm.
Now select “features” and then “Extruded Boss/Base.”
In left window we can edit the feature like from where
the feature begins(from sketch plane, vertex or selected
face) and where it ends(Blind, Midplane, etc.).
Set the Extruded depth to be 70mm and add thin feature
of 5mm to make a hollow cylinder.
Now left click on any face of the cylinder and then click
sketch after that select the outer circle of the similar
face and then click convert entity.
Now draw a circle of diameter 55mm on similar face
and then “Extrude Boss/Base” the circle 5mm in reverse
direction so that it is mounted on the cylinder and also
merge the result.
Now to perform similar feature on the other face of the
cylinder, we select the previous circular sketch and
Extrude it.
In the Extrude feature we set it to “offset” and give
dimension of 70mm below it and reverse the direction so
that similar feature is also added to the second face.
Now we select right plane and draw circle of 50mm on
that face and then extrude it.
In the “Boss Extrude” window on the left we change
from- to “offset” and set it 35mm. Also we set Direction
1 to up to surface and select the surface of cylinder on
which we sketched the previous circle.

Now that third face of the joint is formed we select that

face and then sketch a circle on it of 55mm and again
extruded 5mm in reverse direction so that it is mounted
on top of that face.
Now again draw circle of 45mm on the similar face and
select feature “Extrudes cut” for that circle.
Now in the Extruded cut window on left side we set the
Direction 1 to upto surface and select inside surface of
the cylinder behind the third face.
Hence a T-Type joint is constructed.
