Activity Guide and Evaluation Rubric – Step 3 Identify technology value

1. Activity Description

Type of activity: Collaborative

Evaluation moment: Intermediate Unit 2
Highest score of the activity: 70 points
The activity starts on: Monday, October The activity ends on: Sunday, October
4, 2021 24, 2021
With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcomes:

Analyze valuation methods identifying the worth from technology innovation

The activity consists of:

This course is in English and as it is specified in the Rules and conditions for course
development: “The student must develop the proposed activities on due time,
in English. Contributions in different languages won´t be evaluated”.

Individual
The student must develop the following activities:

1. Each student reads and reviews all of the following references for Unit 2 at
the Learning Environment:

• World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) & International

Trade Centre (ITC), (2010). Exchanging Value – Negotiating Technology
Licenses, A Training Manual (pp 32-41).

• Cohen, J. A. (2005). Intangible Assets: Valuation and Economic

Benefit. Options Model (pp 84-87). Hoboken, N.J.: Wiley.

• Triana Ortiz, K. (15,06,2017). Valuation Methods. [Video].

1
2. According to the understanding of the previous references and your own
research on internet, each student of the group chooses one of the following
topics to broaden his knowledge:

• Income approach method

• Cost approach method
• Market approach method
• Real options method calculated with Decision trees
• Real options method calculated with Black-Sholes model

3. Post the topic selection in the Discussion forum – Unit 2, according to the
following chart, also, as a group, identify who will be the student in charge of
delivering the final document at the Evaluation Environment:

Activities Assignment and Work Responsibilities

Group Number:
Unit name:
Selected topic Student name
Income approach method Student 1. Name
Cost approach method Student 2. Name
Market approach method Student 3. Name
Real options method calculated with Student 4. Name
Decision trees
Real options method calculated with Student 5. Name
Black-Sholes model
Student chosen to submit the Student Name
final document to the Evaluation
Environment:

Each student must respect the other students´ selection, it means for
example, if one student selects Cost approach method, none of the other four
students can develop the Cost approach method, they must choose another topic.
In case a second student presents the development related to Cost approach
method, it won´t be evaluated.

Note: If some of your classmates don't chose some topic because he or she
doesn't participate in the forum, the group can present only the topics developed
for the classmates who have participated in the job. It means for example if there

2
are only three active students, the document will have only three topics
developed, however, as explained in Activity 1, all students must read and review
all references to have a general understanding of all topics.

4. According to the topic chosen previously, the review of Unit 2 references

and your own search on internet, each student must:

Design a creative one-page infographic including the following:

• Student name
• Group number
• Date
• Selected topic
• Selected topic definition
• Processes related to the calculation of the value of technology using
the selected method
• Answer to the question: How can companies create value from their
innovation, applying the method according to the method selected
previously?

Collaborative
The group must develop the following activities:

5. Each student reads and reviews the following reference for Unit 2 at the
Learning Environment

Medellín Cabrera, Enrique Alberto, & Arellano Arellano, Alejandro. (2019).

Technology valuation at universities: Difficulties and
proposals. Contaduría y administración, 64(spe1).

6. Based on the understanding of the Analysis and Results discussion part of

the previous reference, the group selects one of the difficulties in valuing
technologies for transfer identified by the authors in the article, posting the
vote of each student in the following chart:

3
Problem selection chart
Group Number:
Unit name:
Difficulties in valuing technologies for Votes
transfer
Little knowledge of valuation methods by
technology managers in charge of the
process
Lack of information on the market and
commercialization channels
Lack of information on production costs
Ignorance of licenses, patents or similar
technology transfer agreements
lack of communication between developers
and technology managers in charge of the
process
Difficulty selected by the group: Write the difficulty with
more votes

7. Once the difficulty has been selected by the group, each student develops the
following activity:

Hand draw a concept map as a visual aid for a presentation of the difficulty
faced by Colombian companies to value its technology innovations selected
previously, including:

• Student name
• Date
• Unit name
• A concept map describing causes and consequences related to the
selected difficulty faced by companies in Colombia to value its
technology innovations (it means the difficulty with more votes).

4
8. Once the hand draw concept map is done, take a picture and build a
PowerPoint presentation including:

• Cover (Student name, date, unit name, tutor name)

• Concept map picture
• Two recommendations to face the difficulty defined in the Concept
map, applying the concepts studied in this unit, evidencing that, as
industrial engineering professional, understand how to value
technology in a company.

9. Finally, each student records a 2 - 3 minutes video (no less) where he

appears himself using his camera (it means the video shows the face of the
student), showing the PowerPoint presentation indicating his name,
mentioning the date, explaining the concept map defined previously and the
recommendations for the Company to face the difficulty identified.

Save the video in YouTube or any other resource to get a public link and share
it in the Discussion Forum – Unit 2. (In case the video cannot be opened, it
cannot be evaluated).

In case you don´t have a software to record videos including your camera,
you can visit the following link and use the free tool to record the screen
online: https://www.apowersoft.es/grabador-de-pantalla-gratis

10. All students in the group read and review the activities developed by the
other members, consolidate all evidences in a PDF and the student selected
in Activity 3, submits it at the Evaluation Environment, according to the
guidelines given below in section Collaborative Work Evidences, naming it with
the following structure:
