THE COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

I. COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
(1) Identify and classify various plants in the Philippines based on their properties ,actions
and their related characteristics and structure
(2) Apply laboratory skills and field studies in collecting and organizing appropriate data on
plants.
(3) Analyze plant form and function, including selected taxonomy of flowering and non-
flowering plants.
II. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
 Be familiar with the guidelines in conducting laboratory experiments;
 Utilize maximum use and proper care of the compound microscope.

III. INTRODUCTION
A microscope is an instrument used to see objects that are too small to be seen by the
naked eye. The early simple "microscopes" which were only magnifying glasses are more of a
novelty than a scientific tool. Antony Van Leeuwenhoek was the first man to make and use
simple microscopes.
There are several types of microscopes, and they may be grouped in different ways. To
describe how the instruments, interact with a sample to create images is either by sending a
beam of light or electrons to a sample in its optical path; or by scanning across, and a short
distance from, the surface of a sample using a probe.
A compound microscope is an optical instrument with two lens system: the objective and
the eyepiece or the ocular. It can magnify an image up to several hundred times the actual size of
an object. It may be monocular with only one eyepiece or binocular with two eyepieces; one for
each eye of the observer.

V. PROCEDURE

1. Watch the video on how to use a compound microscope at http://youtu.be/-b3Eejf4rDQ .

Note the parts and their functions.
2. Draw the compound microscope and label its parts on your laboratory report.

The Compound Microscope

I. DATA AND RESULTS:

Compound Microscope
1. Draw the compound microscope and label its parts.

3
2. Give the uses of each part.

Eyepiece or Ocular Lenses- this is part where you look through when using the microscope.

Draw Tube- it is below the ocular lenses and it is the part where the eyepiece

Body Tube-this is a part of microscope that is attached to the arm and carries or the or
support the objective lenses.

Revolving Nose Piece-

Objectives Lenses- it is attached to the revolving nose piece, it is one of the important parts of
the microscope because it helps to magnify the specimen that being examined under the
microscope.

Slide- is a thin flat glass that holds the specimen that we want to examine under the
microscope.

II. OBSERVATIONS:

Based on my observation regarding the video you shared regarding the microscope, Prof. Murry
Gans share his knowledge of how things should be done under the microscope. First, he took the
microscope inside the cabinet with full caution, he held it in arms and at the base of the
microscope close to his body to avoid some damage to the microscope and to lay it on the table.
Then after that the next thing he did is he explained what a microscope is, then he explained the
different parts of the microscope like ocular lenses, the purpose of the lens, he also explained the
3 adjustments of light in the microscope such as power switch, diaphragm and dimmer switch.
Then the next thing he introduced was the stage, mechanical stag, he shared the 2 focusing knobs
the fine and coarse knob it is used if we want to adjust or focus the image of the specimen in the
microscope.
He said that before using the microscope we have to clean it first, he uses lens paper then he
takes a piece of it then he use it to clean the lenses of the microscope like ocular lenses and
objective lenses he also include to cleaned the top of the diaphragm.

He uses a microscope slide then puts the specimen on it (the specimen is the word ‘slide’) then
he puts it in a small amount of water then he uses a cover slip, he suggested that if we want to
make sure the specimens have no air the first thing to do is take a cover slip move it towards the
water then when you see the water is on the edge of the cover slip then it's time to drop it on
microscope slide.
