can be creative in delivering knowledge through this medium.

Tittle How to make an educational video creatively?

Character 1. Adlin / Principal - Mdm Adlin

2. Michelle / Parent - Mdm Cham
3. Roshini / Teacher - Miss Ros

Scene Since starting the online classes, many classes are conducted by watching
videos on YouTube. This also led to many students' grades being affected. So
parents, teachers and schools must try their best to think of ways to improve
students’ learning ability through videos on YouTube.

Principal: I looked at the results of the recent exams and it was not very satisfactory.

Parent: Yes! I also agree that because my child's grades have also degraded a lot.

Principal: Miss Ros, what do you think of it?

Teacher: Yes, I have to admit that the student's grades are indeed not so good. But I tried my
best.

Principal: So, we need to discuss how teachers should make educational videos creatively on
YouTube to attract students to study and then improve their grades. Do you have any opinions?

Teacher: Firstly, I will make my educational videos more effective for the students. We know
that the use of videos stimulates the cognitive processes of thinking, reasoning, problem-
solving, decision-making, and creating. Videos take the student beyond recall-and-relate
activities. I will use videos to engage students with more complex themes, and to facilitate
further engagement with the content.

Principal: Is there any example?

Teacher: For example, videos that I make will allow the students to gain in-depth information.
For me, making YouTube videos is the best way to help the students. By using YouTube in the
classroom, teachers are essentially allowing their students to dig deeper and comprehend the
lessons better. Students also enjoy spending their classroom time watching YouTube videos
which also helps to improve their listening comprehension and pronunciation skills as they
mimic the people speaking in the videos, and teachers are able to spend more time focusing on
the students instead of trying to explain complex topics.

Parent: Right. For me, I think teachers should state clear learning objectives in the video. This
can let us know what students have to learn in the following video. For sure, teachers will have
a clear goal in their mind in order to produce a video. In order to do this, teachers need to have
clearly defined objectives for the videos. Setting clear goals is helpful to design the videos
effectively, as students will have clear focus and will be able to meet the learning goals.

Teacher: Other than stating the video objective, anything else can make students interested in
the learning video? Any suggestions from Mdm Adlin?

Principal: Well, teachers can deliver knowledge through YouTube creatively by triggering unique
and interesting discussions amongst their students. For example, teachers can start a thought-
provoking discussion to get their students talking on YouTube. Introduce an engaging topic and
ask for students’ opinions in the comments section. So, attract the students to watch your
discussion, especially if it’s based on something they’re very passionate about. If the teachers'
video is successful, it may spark reaction videos from the students to study.

Parent: Yes, teachers also can put short clips as a topic in learning contents. There are
documentary channels such as National Geographic, BBC and Channel 4 among others where
teachers can obtain and play short clips to put the subject matter into proper context for the
students. This will make the videos more creative and I am sure that my child will be attracted
by the short clips.

Teacher: Alright, noted!

Parent: But before that, the teacher should prepare the teaching content. Maybe start with a
rough draft of the information and messages you wish to convey. When mastering how to make
educational videos that are effective, remember to balance emotion with facts.

Principal: Exactly, draft is very important so that the teacher won't be confused about the
content. Use infographics and vivid images to explain in detail the points that teachers can
make in each video. Visuals have been proven to not only make learning easier but more
enjoyable too, right?

Parent: Absolutely! Illustrations in the videos also can attract my child to watch the videos. So, I
think that teachers can use illustrations in the videos. Illustrations are a great way to
communicate information, especially when you have lots to say. Whether the teacher wants to
create a crowd of people or a cool depiction of some new fancy gadget, illustrations can draw
the eye and make the presentation more interesting.

Principal: Yes, I agree too! To further enhance students' understanding, the teachers can use
relevant videos on news reports, documentaries, current affairs and much more to get the
student opinions and gauge the impact of the learning on the students. Offer an entertaining
way for your students to learn such as educated animation like hand-drawn animation, infusing
gaming, music, songs and others. Therefore, teachers can share knowledge of a subject with an
educational YouTube video effectively.

Teacher: Such a great idea!

Teacher: As a teacher, I think that flip lessons may help students to understand a subject more.

Principal: Flip lessons? Would you mind explaining it?

Teacher: Flipped learning is taking strong roots in most of the learning institutions and it
becomes easy and efficient when using videos in the classroom. YouTube is a great place to
start creating materials because you can do everything with just this one website and do not
even have to worry about purchasing any expensive software to get flipping. There are some
supports given by using YouTube as a flip lesson.
Parent: What are they?

Teacher: Among them are, when students don't understand a new concept, they can ask
questions and get immediate targeted answers. The time spent in the classroom becomes not
enough for all the conversations and collaboration that inevitably spur from exploring subjects
in a deeper manner. Students who are absent due to illness, too long a commute, or any other
reason, can catch up with their peers faster and easier with the flipped classroom model than
with the standard one. Therefore, YouTube is still a great place to post your videos because the
site is one that is likely familiar to your students.

Parent: Such an interesting idea! And as a parent, I hope that teachers can save their videos so
that my child can watch it anytime.

Teacher: What do you mean?

Parent: Hmmm.. Maybe teachers should archive their video works. The video can make it easy
for current and future students to access. In the archived video, teachers have to record their
screen so that students can see what teachers are sharing and trying to say. Teachers can
record the screen to show the things that you may not be able to do via text or audio only.
Recording is helpful and would make learning much more enjoyable and memorable. There are
various tools that allow teachers to record your screen, such as Camtasia or Screenr.

Principal: So, teachers can create a YouTube Channel to contain all the videos relevant to a
particular subject for students. The YouTube Channel is especially important when reviewing for
exams. When exams are just around the corner, videos become very effective in helping the
students to refresh their minds on tough topics that might require a lot of time to review during
exams, especially to help our struggling students that they can rewind or play it at their own
pace.

Teacher: Yeay, I will try to create a Youtube Channel and upload my video there. What about
the duration of the videos? I think the duration of the videos are not very important. It is?
Parent: Hurmm.. I am not exactly sure about that. But for me, it is better if the videos are short.
Maybe teachers can make it as short as possible?

Teacher: Really? I have never cared about the duration of my videos all the time. Because I
believe that my students will finish watching it.

Principal: Haha! That is from the teachers’ perspective. But anyway, I agree with Mdm Cham.
We must keep the video shorter. This is because the length of a video is the most important
aspect to keep the learners engaged via the videos.

Parent: Yes! Mdm Adlin has the same toughness as me. So maybe teachers need to ensure
that the videos are not long; instead, ensure that they are short. Thus, if the videos are too long,
teachers can try to break it up into few parts. Every part keeps it between 15 until 30 minutes to
ensure that students do not get bored. Teachers need to ensure that the videos developed are
easily digestible by the students. For example, the videos must include more visuals than text.
Because the longer period and textual video will make students bored to watch.

Teacher: Ohh I see! So after this I will try my best to make all of my educational videos more
creative to improve the learning process of students! Thank you Mdm Adlin & Mdm Cham. Your
suggestions really benefited.

Principal: I believe you can do well, Miss Ros.

Parent: Thank you too! Goodluck to you Miss Ros.
