3. 5 × 3/7
= 5/1 × 3/7
= (5 × 3)/ (1 × 7)
= 15/7
4. 5/12 × 9
= 5/12 × 9/1
= (5 × 9)/ (12 × 1)
= (5 × 3)/ (4 × 1)
= 15/4
MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTION
Sometimes for indicating multiplication of two fractions, we use the word ‘of ‘as
follows:
(1) 1/2 of 8 (3) 2/5 of 25
= 1/2 × 8 = 2/5 × 25
= 1/2 × 8/1 = 2/5 × 25/1
= (1 × 8)/(2 × 1) = (2 × 25)/(5 × 1)
= 8/2 = 50/5
=4 = 10
(2) 1/5 of 20 (4) 2/3 of 5/7
= 1/5 × 20 = 2/3 × 5/7
= 1/5 × 20/1
= (2 ×5)/(3 × 7)
= 20/5
= 10/21.

DIVISION OF FRACTION
There’s a shortcut you can use that makes dividing fractions much simpler. You
can solve most division problems by following these three steps:
EXAMPLE 1:
Imagine the example equation as a cake. You’ve got half of the cake remaining. If
each serving of the cake is ⅙ of the whole, how many servings do you have left?
½ ÷ 1/6 =
²⁄₁ × ½ = 1
To find the reciprocal of a fraction you simply flip the numbers. The denominator
becomes the numerator and vice versa.
Look at the example equation again:
½ ÷ ⅙ =?
The first step to solve the problem is to turn our divisor, ⅙, into a reciprocal.
⅙ → ⁶⁄₁
For example, you almost never say five-tenths or ⁵⁄₁₀. Instead, you simplify that to
one-half or ½.
To get a fraction down to its simplest form, you divide the numerator and
denominator by their greatest common factor. The greatest common factor in ⁵⁄₁₀ is
five. Dividing both numbers down by five leaves you with ½.
EXAMPLE 2:
⅓ ÷ ⁶⁄₅ = ? → ⅓ × ⅚ = ⁵⁄₁₈
Creating a reciprocal and multiplying an equation rather than dividing lets you skip
several steps in an equation. It’s a shortcut that will make your lives a whole lot
easier!
Change your mixed fraction into an improper fraction and then proceed with the
three-step strategy. To do this, multiply your whole number by the denominator.
Then take that value and add it to your numerator.
2 ½ changes to ⁵⁄₂.
Example 1:
3 ⅓ ÷ ⅖ = ? → ¹⁰⁄₃ ÷ ⅖ = ? → ¹⁰⁄₃ × ⁵⁄₂ = ⁵⁰⁄₆ → ²⁵⁄₃ → 8 ⅓
Example 2:
¼ ÷ 2 ⅙ = ? → ¼ ÷ ¹³⁄₆ = ? → ¼ × ⁶⁄₁₃ = ⁶⁄₅₂ → ³⁄₂₆
Example 3:
2 ½ ÷ 1 ⅓ = ? → ⁵⁄₂ ÷ ⁴⁄₃= ? → ⁵⁄₂ × ¾ = ¹⁵⁄₈ → 1 ⅞
1. 6 x 1/12 =
2. 3 ÷ 1/3 =
