COMBUSTION ENGINEERING
ASSIGNMENT 2

Discuss the difference of 2-stroke engine from the 4-stroke engine. Why is 2-stroke
engine being replaced by 4-stroke engine for motorcycles?

2-stroke and 4-stroke engines are both internal combustion (IC) engines that we
commonly use in motorcycles, generators and any machine that requires fuel-burning. A
two-stroke engine completes a power cycle with literally two strokes per one revolution
of the crankshaft. The piston moves up and down only. While in a 4-stroke engine, the
piston makes 4 strokes while revolving the crankshaft.
Two-stroke engines are now being replaced by four-stroke engines due to the following
reasons:
1. Four-stroke engines are generally way more efficient than two-stroke engines
because it has higher energy conversion, contributing less air pollutants.
2. In terms of torque, two-stroke engine generates higher torque than the four-stroke.
3. In terms of thermal efficiency, four-stroke engines are higher than the two-stroke.
4. Four-stroke engines require less lubricants than two-strokes.
5. Less wear and tear happens in four-stroke engines, meaning the machine can last
longer and needs a lot of time before replacement.
6. And of course four-stroke engines are quiet, while two-stroke engines produce
heavier noise.
The only advantage of two-stroke engine to four-stroke engine is its price. But
considering the efficiency and the less harmful effect of the four-stroke engine in the
environment, we should of course choose it.
