HOW GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING WAS CONDUCTED IN MY TRIBE.

How guidance and counselling was conducted by the Fante’s.

Guidance and counselling are ideas that existed very long time ago, before 1960s the traditional
chief’s family head and religious gave guidance to people in Ghana as the elders of the society
they use their experience to enable people assist people who were confounded with problems in
their lives

Counselling was thereby a process that involves a special type of helping, counsellors to deal with
fact associated with their life’s whereas guidance is the process of helping an individual to
understand himself or herself or his or her world

Among the people of fante’s, counselling was given in various forms the most common was which
were giving advices and sharing of wisdom and helping a follow people to solve his or her
problems. The advices provided by the elderly men and woman was part of the counselling
qualities of the family or society for young boys or girls

The guidance and counselling that was perform by the fante’s took in vocational guidance “by
establishing youth employment services for all youth” moral and social guidance

The knowledge and attitude of the tribe was transformed from the elders to the children in the form
of oral instructions and their social practice activities such as festivals

The counselling processes

Counseling can take place in the homes, the traditional homes, and any purpose places of need.
The interaction can be for one counseling session only, or can be for several sessions, spread over
a period of time, depending on the scope of the problem and the nature of its representation.
Usually counselling in the fantes is perform by elders of the family. It can be not well plan or come
by impromptu, most times it comes by the behaviour of one of the member behaviour, counselling
among the fante’s either base good or bad behaviour. Bad behviours are used as form of advice
given to others to stay away from it, including the victim as well. The good behaviors are use as
form of encouragement to others. Those with such behaviours are sometimes awarded. depending
on prevailing circumstances and conditions in each case. The Fante counseling process usually
involves four elements: traditional counselor, client, family, and community

Guidance and counselling were given in various forms, the most common of which were giving
advice and sharing wisdom. Giving advice has been a common way of providing help for other
people. The advice offered was frequently instrumental in helping people to consider their future.
In many instances, the extended family was the main source of advice for family/clan members.
There was usually no shortage of people willing to share their wisdom with others. Therefore,
giving advice often promoted the dependence of the young persons on the advice given which was
largely subjective and did not promote the personal development of young people. Wisdom
generally refers to experience and knowledge about life and using them judiciously. In Fante’s
societies, it was considered the responsibility of elders to provide wisdom or counsel to young
boys and girls. The wisdom provided by elderly men and women was part of the counseling
function of the family or society for boys and girls. Another aspect of wisdom as counselling is
sharing proverbs or folk stories.
