Week 2 – Introduction to ILP

Week 2A - Mon 1/2/2021

Act
Introduction to ILP. Received my ILP workbook and watched previous years' submissions to get an
idea of what ILP is about.
Reflect
I have learnt what an ILP submission should look like, to replicate for my project this year.
Plan
Think about some ideas of what I would like to design.

Week 2A - Fri 5/2/2021

Act
Received materials like the Design overview, the 'Student Contract', how to draw a mind map,
'How to maintain your process journal', and 'Is this a Good Question? and glued them into my
workbook. Watched a PowerPoint presentation on inquiry questions
Reflect
Learnt about characteristics of a good inquiry question. I had some ideas on what I would like to
design but after watching the power point, I understand that the inquiry questions would precede
that. Therefore, I have made that adjustment to the plan to come back to those ideas once we have
created inquiry questions.
Using question evaluation strategies which I learnt in class, I judged various different inquiry
questions, and got an idea of what a good inquiry question should look like.
Plan
I need to bring my ILP workbook and laptop for next lesson, to research and record progress for my
project.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Create Task List/Project plan and To-do list 1
Week 3 – Passion mind map, Inquiry question, evaluation and improvement

Week 3B - Mon 8/2/2021

Act
Created a passions mind map and used it to formulate some ideas and initial inquiry question.
Reflect
Now that I have a task list, I can track progress. I am developing my initial inquiry question and
ideas which aligns to my passion mind map. I have learnt that I need to be passionate about the
project idea that I finally choose to keep myself motivated.
Plan
Finish creating inquiry question and evaluation. Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for next
lesson, to research and record progress.

Week 3B - Fri 12/2/2021

Act
Glued 'Concept Question Chain Activity' and 'Project Question Evaluation' sheets into my
workbook. Develop ideas and inquiry question further using evaluation criteria
Reflect
I have learnt how to make a good question to base my ILP project on, and have assessed my
questions with various criteria, even given it to a friend for feedback. I have decided to maintain
my journal entry, task list and to-do list online as I find it easier to do on laptop. I will print and
glue it to the diary each week.
Plan
Finalize inquiry question and read about mental health issues and anxiety. Bring in my ILP
workbook and laptop for next lesson, to research and record progress.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Create initial inquiry question 1
Evaluate initial inquiry question 1
Read about mental health issues 2
Read about exam/study related stress in high school students 2
Week 4 – Research and Bibliography, creative analysis of inquiry question

Week 4A - Mon 15/2/2021

Act
Learnt about annotated bibliographies and notetaking. Stuck 'How to write an annotated
bibliography' and 'Note-Making from Written Text' sheets into workbook.
Reflect
I continue to be on track as per the project plan. I need to learn to prioritize my tasks better and not
everything can be top priority or must do. I learnt how to conduct research and cite it in the format
of an annotated bibliography. I need to learn about critical and creative analysis tools to develop
my concept further. I must record my research using techniques learnt for bibliography and note-
making scaffold.
Plan
Learn about analysis tools and complete creative analysis of inquiry question to create ideas. Bring
in my ILP workbook and laptop for next lesson, to research and record progress.

Week 4A - Fri 19/2/2021

Act
Received project pitch assessment notification. Conducted some research on my topic, including
some statistics and articles. Started to write an annotated bibliography for one of them.
Reflect
I am on track for developing my concept. I have done some research and have the bibliography
format to cite it with. I have decided to use a creative tool (Parnes) to assess my inquiry question
further and accordingly conducted the research.
Plan
Complete my annotated bibliography for one of the sites. Create several project ideas using
divergent thinking. Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and
record progress.

Task Priority (1-3, 1

being highest)
Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Learn about Parnes and Starburst analysis tools 1
Conduct creative analysis of inquiry question using Parnes model to 1
create several project ideas (Divergent thinking).
Conduct Research to develop the concept further and create 1
bibliography
Read about counselling and stress management 3
Read about open source and how to use existing open-source tools to create 3
customized solution
Week 5 – Solution evaluation, shortlisting, research and start project outline

Week 5B - Mon 22/2/2021

Act
Completed the analysis using Parnes model and ended up with several ideas. Started to cite my
second website, researched a little bit more on existing projects similar to mine.
Reflect
On track for developing my proposal, as I have started annotating my second research site. I learnt
the importance of divergent and convergent thinking using Parnes model. This is extremely useful
to finalize the project I would like to do. I need to come up with solution evaluation criteria to
shortlist (Convergent thinking). For this I need to do further research on target market and needs.
Plan
Do more research to come up with solution evaluation criteria. Complete my second annotated
bibliography, start annotating my third (the other project similar to mine). Bring in my ILP
workbook and laptop for next lesson, to research and record progress.

Week 5B - Thu 25/2/2021
Act
Created a brainstorm for my ILP project, including what I need for my project pitch and what I
need to focus on for the rest of the year.
Reflect
Using the research on target audience and need was useful as that helped me to create effective
criteria to shortlist my project list. I also now have a broad scaffold of what I need to do for the
remainder of the year which I will fine tune once the product is finalized. This is my first time
doing a project like this and it’s important to take feedback from the teacher on whether I am on the
right track. I found some technology tools like chatbot and virtual human interface that address
problem areas like virtual interview. This is good news because I can use these technologies to
build my project for the content related study/exam related stress/anxiety for high school students.
Some attempts have also been made in the US to use these technologies for counselling, but they
are still prototypes, and do not target my audience and issue. I have used critical thinking strategies
to cite my website.
Plan
Review my progress with teacher next week and take feedback. Complete second annotated
bibliography, start annotating my third, research how to tackle the project. Bring in my ILP
workbook and laptop for next lesson, to research and record progress.

Task Priority (1-3, 1

being highest)
Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Conduct further research on target audience to finalize solution 1
evaluation criteria
Using solution evaluation, shortlist 3 project ideas (Convergent thinking) 1
Create project outline 1
Review project pitch requirement and assessment criteria 2
Read about how to use existing technologies for chatbot  3
Week 6 – Feedback, create project pitch and project outline

Week 6 - Mon 1/3/2021

Act
Created bibliographies and a draft of my project pitch.
Reflect
The content of the project pitch seems a bit too long for a 3-minute presentation. I need to make it
short and punchy and therefore need to understand the essential components of the project pitch
from the teacher.
Plan
Need to take feedback on project pitch from the teacher to check if I am on the right track.

Week 6 - Fri 5/3/2021

Act
Took feedback from the teacher and peers on project pitch and updated it accordingly.
Started to read about the Virtual Human Interface toolkit.
Reflect
While making the project pitch slides with less content, I realized I needed to make palm cards as
well, so that flow of my thoughts, and details on the slides can be excluded from the pitch but
included in the speech.
I am starting to get an idea of how to use the Virtual Human Interface toolkit. It does not seem very
difficult to do.
Plan
Need to create palm cards for the project pitch.

Task Priority (1-3, 1

being highest)
Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Feedback from teacher on project pitch format, whether I am on right 1
track and confirmation of assessment date
Feedback from students 2
Create bibliographies 1
Read about Virtual Human interface open-source toolkit 3
Week 7 – Finalize project pitch, product prototype and requirements/constraints.

Week 7 - Mon 8/3/2021

Act
Updated the project pitch, received instructions in class to shortlist 3 prototypes.
Completed the project constraints document.
Reflect
I don’t fully understand what the prototype is in this context - whether it’s an actual product or not,
so I need to clarify with the teacher. I am concerned that if it requires actual prototypes to be
created then I may not be on track to complete this next week. Apart from that, I am on track for
everything else including project pitch and outline.
There are a number of requirements in terms of skills and resources, some of which I have and
some of which I need to develop and obtain.
Plan
Talk to the teacher to clarify the prototype.
In terms of developing technical skills, I Will have to take some courses in the term holidays, and
in terms of counselling skills, I will need to talk to the school counsellors and the wellbeing
teachers

Week 7 - Fri 12/3/2021

Act
Clarified with the teacher and the product prototype is simply listing the advantages and
disadvantages of the 3 shortlisted product ideas. Completed this.
Finalized project pitch and outline. Created product advantages/disadvantages and product
requirement/constraint slide. Also finalized the bibliographies.
Reflect
I am back on track after the clarification from the teacher on product prototype and everything else
including the project pitch, outline and bibliographies.
Plan
Practice delivering the project pitch and recording/providing feedback.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Create palm cards 2
Create project constraints/requirements 1
Create 3 product prototype 1
Finalize project pitch and outline 1
Finalize bibliographies 2
Week 8 – Assessment, Pitch presentation, Receiving and giving feedback

Week 8 - Mon 15/3/2021

Act
Presented my project pitch. Received and provided feedback on other people’s pitches. Asked for
volunteers to voice-act for my project.
Reflect
It was very interesting to see what other people put in their pitches. Most of my peers included a
detailed slide on the “Discover” phase of the project, and some statistics to justify why they chose
their questions. I realised that the feedback was anonymous, which allowed for people to provide
truthful and honest comments, without the worry of being socially judged. It is still too early to get
volunteers. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with most people not having any missions,
the key themes for the medals were that the pitch was engaging, well researched, and the inquiry
question was relevant. The key theme in the missions was that the mission seemed too complex to
build in the given time frame.
Plan
Follow up with the students and teachers. Come up with more details on: skillset, requirements,
what are they getting in return (skillset, volunteer hours)? I need to think about simplifying the
product scope to complete it in the ILP timeframe.

Week 8 - Fri 19/3/2021

Act
Provided feedback on other people’s presentations.
Reflect
It was very interesting to see what other people put in their pitches. Most of my peers included a

Start work on developing the product concept further and simplifying 3
(progressive)
Week 9 – Incorporating Feedback and Planning for Term 2 and 3

Week 9 - Mon 22/3/2021

Act
Provided feedback on other people’s presentations.
Reflect
It was very interesting to see what other people put in their pitches. Most of my peers included a
detailed slide on the “Discover” phase of the project, and some statistics to justify why they chose
their questions. I realised that the feedback was anonymous, which allowed for people to provide

product scope to complete it in the ILP timeframe.

Week 9 - Fri 26/3/2021

Act
Provided feedback on other people’s presentations. Started making my detailed task list for Term 2.
There are a lot of factors
in making my product, so creating the task list proved difficult and required a lot of research.
Plan
Research how to make my product and come up with a basic outline. Use this outline to finish a
detailed task list for Term 2.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Incorporate feedback 1
Update high level plan for Term 2 and 3 2
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Term 2
Week 1 – Introduction to Assessment Task 2

Week 1A - Fri 23/4/2021

Act
Received the assessment notification. Learned about requirements for Assessment Task 2. We have
3 shortlisted product ideas from Term 1 and also the feedback from students, peers and teachers.
Researched and shortlisted 3 base prototypes that are fit for purpose. Two of them are open source
(chatbots) and 1 was by the University of Southern California (virtual human interface).
Reflect
This assignment seems a little bit challenging as it is an on-the-spot interview, but there is less
paperwork compared to the last term. I feel like the virtual human interface will be more immersive
than the chatbots but a little more complex to code. Most of the feedback has been on the scope and
complexity of the project being too ambitious for completion within the ILP timeframe and I must
review my product selection and design to adjust accordingly.
Plan
Read the assignment notification and create a plan. Start the assignment. Download the softwares
for all 3 products to assess its usability and suitability in line with the project idea and the
feedback.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Download the software to assess its usability 2
Create Task List/Project plan and To-do list 1
Week 2 – Product expert, project plan

Week 2B - Mon 26/4/2021

Act
Started creating a project plan for Term 2. Made simple notes from Assessment notification.
Reflect
I have to research and download the code from an open source chatbot idea. I need to contact the
University of Southern California for the baseline of their research product that can be customized
and used for my project.
Plan
Contact a product expert to guide me through the task.
Download and install the code for chatbot.
Contact the University of Southern California

Week 2B - Fri 30/4/2021

Act
Contacted the school counsellor and agreed with her to be my product expert, since the creation of
my product relies heavily on expertise in the counselling and psychology field. Downloaded and
installed the first two from open-source libraries and contacted the University of Southern
California.
Reflect
Being a school counsellor, this person is very experienced and qualified in the field of psychology.
I met with her on Wednesday and discussed how to start a session, and what the environment
should look like. These ongoing discussions will greatly help in the creation of my product. The
ones from the open-source libraries seem to be easier to modify, and quicker to use since I can just
download them, however, I really want to try out the virtual human interface model, although this
might take some time considering I have to contact the university first to be able to download it. I
might also apply some feedback to shorten the scope of my product to make it viable for the given
timeframe.
Plan
I need to bring my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and record progress for
my project. Improve the scope of the project.
Follow up with University of Southern California on the baseline toolkit.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Alter the scope of the project 2
Create Task List/Project plan and To-do list 1
Week 3 – Product progress, voice actors

Week 3A - Mon 3/5/2021

I was not present during this lesson.

Week 3A - Fri 7/5/2021

Act
Received the baseline toolkit pack from the University of Southern California. Further improved on
the scope of the product.
Reflect
I have got one voice actor for my project; I just need two more. The Virtual Human software seems
a little complicated as to how all the different components work together, however, I think the more
I use it, the more comfortable I will become with it. I think I will stick with the virtual human
interface model for now.
Plan
Install the baseline toolkit.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Iron out any bugs in the Virtual Human Software 2
Create initial inquiry question 1
Evaluate initial inquiry question 1
Install the prototype model 1
Read about mental health issues 2
Read about exam/study related stress in high school students 2
Week 4 – Research and Bibliography, creative thinking strategies

Week 4B - Mon 10/5/2021

Act
I mainly focussed on getting the bibliography for all of my research done today. Installed the
prototype and found several installation issues.
Reflect
My bibliography is pretty diverse. I cited quite a few sources and included a video. I also
referenced the school counsellor, as she has and will help me immensely in the development of my
project. The installation issues are quite confusing but should be fixed with enough research. I have
also noticed that I need to learn how to use ‘Unity’, a game engine, for the prototype, which means
I will have to make further modifications to the scope of the project.
Plan
Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and record progress. Improve
scope of the project, learn Unity.

Week 4B - Fri 19/2/2021

Act
Used the future’s line and if-then model as creative thinking strategies that will help with my
project planning.
Reflect
These two creative thinking strategies have helped me to identify potential problems that could
happen in the future, and different courses of action I might have to take, including altering the
scope of my product. These two strategies have helped me immensely to be prepared for potential
problems.
Plan
Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and record progress.
Continue to seek additional voice actors. Talk to the school counsellor.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Talk to the school counsellor 2
Adjust the scope of the project 2
Learn Unity 1
Seek additional voice actors 2
Week 5 – Installation of software, architecture diagrams. design improvements

Week 5A - Mon 17/5/2021

Act
Researched the Unity module. Created some diagrams to show the improvement of my project’s
scope throughout the term until now. Improved the product design using creative thinking
strategies.
Reflect
Unity seems pretty easy to use, and I think it just requires some getting used to, although the
interface does seem intimidating at times. The diagrams have really helped me to see how my
project scope has been evolving throughout the year, and I think it will be very useful for the
interview.
Plan
Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and record progress.
Continue to seek additional voice actors. Talk to the school counsellor. Learn Unity.

Week 5A - Fri 21/5/2021
Act
Took feedback on revised product design. Fixed the installation issues with the virtual human
software. Researched the architecture diagrams to see how all the different components work
together.
Reflect
The installation issues were quite easy to fix once I had done some research. After these issues
were fixed, I also looked up the architecture diagrams for the software, and it seemed quite
complicated. However, if I learn Unity, I will be able to configure the different components of the
software, so that will remain my priority.
I now have a better understanding of the module and will need to modify the product design
further.
Plan
Bring in my ILP workbook and laptop for the next lesson, to research and record progress.
Continue to see additional voice actors. Learn Unity and build an initial prototype by the end of
Week 7.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 3
Update Task List/Project plan and To-do list 2
Seek additional voice actors 2
Talk to the school counsellor 2
Start building initial prototype 1
Learn Unity 1
Week 6 – Working on Initial prototype and design changes

Week 6B - Mon 24/5/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. Made the initial prototype and made the base module work. We have one
model speaking and responding. However, I have yet to research and add my own dialogues.
Reflect
Adding my own module still seems complex, however once I have learnt unity, I should be able to
handle that better. I need to adjust the product scope and design to ensure this remains achievable
in the timeframe for ILP.
Plan
Continue to learn Unity and create an initial prototype by the end of this week.

Week 6B - Fri 28/5/2021

Act
Continue to learn unity and build initial prototype - facing some technical issues. Interview
preparation. Print task list and journal entry (which is maintained online) and paste it in the ILP
Journal.
Reflect
Need to fix the issues with the initial prototype and adjust scope / project plan. I need to practice
for the interview for the assignment task next week.
Plan
Continue to work on the prototype.
Adjust project plan.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Week 7 – Initial prototype completion.

Week 7A - Mon 31/5/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. I learned about camera angles, as well as some coding in the C#
language.
Reflect
I feel like this was helpful for my project as the camera angles will be crucial to emphasise the
impact of the counselling session on my audience.
Plan
Continue to learn Unity, work on the prototype.

Week 7A - Fri 4/6/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. I learned about collision physics. Made more progress on my prototype.
Reflect
I feel like learning the different types of physics in Unity, I will have a well-rounded view on the
physics aspect of this and will be able to create dynamic interfaces for my project, for example,
effective lighting in the scene.
Plan
Continue to learn Unity, work on the prototype, overcome any bugs encountered in the making of
the prototype.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Week 8 – Start development

Week 8B - Mon 7/6/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. I learned about how to create a split-screen interface for a local
multiplayer type of game. I was unable to fix the problems I was having with the prototype.
Reflect
I feel like learning how to create a split-screen interface was very useful as helped me to understand
how to manipulate the screen displayed when the game is being played. The problems that I faced
with my prototype were very difficult to solve, and I researched this extensively with minimal
results.
Plan
Continue to learn Unity. Contact the university to help me solve this problem.

Week 8B - Fri 11/6/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. I learned about the various techniques to incorporate different camera
angles, user inputs, movement and physics in a local multiplayer interface environment. Tried to
access the Google Groups sent by the university, so I contacted the university about this, as well as
some I faced with my problems with my prototype.
Reflect
I feel like the actual coding and programming part of Unity that I learned was extremely useful, and
this could allow me to expand my project scope to potentially incorporate a multiplayer interface if
time permits.
Plan
Continue to learn Unity.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Week 9 – Continue development

Week 9A - Mon 14/6/2021

Act
Continued to learn Unity. I learned about prefabricated objects and the commands required to shoot
an object, and how to delete it once it has left the user’s field of view. Received a reply from the
university. Started my interview
Reflect
I feel like I have learned enough of Unity to now start work on building my project, since I am now
delving into the specifics of gameplay and straying away from general Unity. I received a reply
from the university - they agreed to share the Google Group on an alternate account with me, which
worked, and also answered the problems which I was having.
Plan
Incorporate the solutions provided by the university regarding my problems - this includes
downloading the relevant modules and potential assets from Unity. Get an initial prototype
working.

Week 9A - Fri 18/6/2021

Act
I attempted my initial prototype, but it didn’t work. Finished my interview.
Reflect
I worked on the initial prototype, but it didn’t work. The first problem I ran into was the different
modules not working properly and therefore not interacting with each other. It took me a few days
to fix this problem, but I ran into another problem; the final prototype didn’t work, and this was due
to the name of my PC having an underscore in its name.
Plan
Fix the problem with the initial prototype, maybe consider a different device to do it on.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Week 10 – Continue development and planning for Term 3

Week 10B - Mon 21/6/2021

Act
Fixed the problems with my initial prototype. Got the voice recognition module working as well.
Reflect
I was able to fix the problems with my initial prototype. I decided to continue the project on a
laptop at home which runs on a windows environment, downloaded the required modules, and was
able to get an initial prototype working. This one featured animation, voice recognition, and some
basic speaking conditions. I also found out that in order to record voices, I need to create 4 different
files per recording.
Plan
Finalise voice actors. Speak with the counsellor regarding the speech for the prototype. Continue
building on the prototype to make it more sophisticated.

Week 10B - Fri 25/6/2021

Act
Spoke with the school counsellor on multiple occasions. I also started to record the discussions I
was having with the counsellor in a separate Google Document. Cited both the school counsellors
in my bibliography. Made progress on my prototype: got the Amazon AWS server working.
Reflect
I received a lot of valuable information from the school counsellor, Tanja Musik, on study-related
stress and anxiety. This will help me greatly in the production of my prototype for ILP as the
discussions we had were very insightful and relevant to my product. I also took some pictures of a
poster which also contained helpful information on how to approach someone who seems to be
having a tough time. Ms Musik also distributed some printouts on various relaxation strategies and
study tips to help students who are experiencing study-related stress and anxiety. In terms of my
prototype, I got the Amazon AWS server up and running, meaning that anyone in the world can
access the server at any time, from anywhere. The only thing I need to work on now is uploading
my advancements in my initial prototype and uploading it to this online server.
Plan
Upload the advancements in the initial prototype and upload it onto the Amazon AWS server. Read
and understand Assessment Task 3 and form a plan for it.

Week 1 – Introduction to Assessment Task 3 and Environment preparation

Week 1A - Mon 12/7/2021

Act
I got the initial prototype of my Virtual Human software onto the Amazon AWS server. Read
Assessment Task 3 notification for phase 3 i.e., for the completion of the ‘share’ part of the project.
Reflect
Uploading my prototype to the Amazon AWS server which is publicly accessible will meet the
distribution requirement for the project. Additionally, working on the project on the AWS server
will mitigate the risks of unknown environmental variables and ensure consistency of development
and delivery. I ran into a lot of problems after uploading the prototype on the AWS server and it
wasn’t working.
I also discovered the issue of not being able to do face-to-face sharing due to the lockdown. I,
therefore, adjusted the scope to deploy the prototype on the AWS public sharing website, and also
to get familiarised with the movie software to capture the interaction that can then be shared.
Plan
Investigate and fix issues on AWS server in order for virtual human prototype to work

Week 1A - Fri 16/7/2021

Act
Made progress on resolving the issues on the AWS environment for my prototype.\
Reflect
I was able to resolve a number of issues and made substantial progress in installing the
dependencies for the Virtual Human software to work on AWS. During this process, I realised that
the AWS server did not have a number of softwares that were a dependency for running the Virtual
Human software and I had to set them up manually. Although I have resolved quite a few issues,
there are still more issues to resolve before the prototype can work.
Additionally, uploading the software onto the AWS server took a long time due to the large number
and size of the files that were being uploaded, and the server being located in America.
Plan
Continue fixing issues for the prototype to work.

Week 2 – Setting up prototype environment (AWS server)

Week 2B - Mon 19/7/2021

Act
Uploaded all the necessary files onto the AWS server.
Reflect
I was able to upload all the necessary files onto the AWS server, and therefore I was able to get
Logger software working, which displayed the status of different components of the Virtual Human
software using which I was able to see which components were still not working. Some
components were still not working as I hadn’t set the Virtual Human software up fully on the AWS
server yet. I think that these should be simple to fix, which I know from my experience of setting it
up on my local computer.
Plan
Finish setting up the Virtual Human software on the AWS server.  Fix any other bugs that I may
come across.

Week 2B - Fri 23/7/21

Act
Fixed most issues for setting up the Virtual Human prototype onto the public AWS server.
Reflect
This week I was able to set up most of the Virtual Human software onto the AWS server. I ran into
some major issues with the speech software (AcquireSpeech, Speech Client and Text to Speech).
These problems included ‘Acquire Speech’ and ‘Text to Speech’ not starting up, and the fact that
the client would start without any issues, except that the other modules had to start up first for the
client to work properly. Based on these aspects, I think this problem may take time to solve.
Plan
Complete setting up the software on the AWS server.  Fix any other bugs that I may come across.

Week 3 – Fixing issues in the prototype software components and their integration

Week 3A - Mon 26/7/2021
Act
All speech-related components working. Ran into problems with SmartBody.
Reflect
Over the weekend, I was able to fix all the speech-related components, including the ‘Acquire
Speech’ and ‘Text to Speech’ modules. The speech-related components are now working. On the
first trial run, Unity opened up, and I was able to see the chosen character, who I will call ‘Brad’
for now. One major problem in this run was that the ‘SmartBody’ module was not working, which
meant that Brad could not do anything. By having a good look at the modules that were running
and the background processes, I think this is the only pending problem that needs to be fixed.
Plan
Fix the SmartBody software. Fix any other bugs that I may come across. Make a plan for
Assessment Task 3.

Week 3A - Fri 30/7/2021

Act
Fixed SmartBody (final component). The prototype is now fully functional in the public
environment. Made a plan for Assessment Task 3.
Reflect
Over the last week, I was able to fix the ‘SmartBody’ module of the Virtual Human software,
which means that it is now working. In order to make sure that this was working, during my trial
run, I tested a few different animations, that were provided with the software. Brad can now also
say phrases from the pre-recorded set of questions and answers since the speech-related
components are functional as well. Brad can also hear and respond to the questions from this pre-
recorded set. Now that the software is functional, I have planned to work on putting questions and
answers into a custom array during each lesson of ILP.
Plan
Start building the textual content for questions and answers for the character. If possible, try to
make associated gestures as well. The priority will be higher for text-based Q&A content.

Week 4 – Start building the textual content for the counselling Q&A in the scope

Week 4B - Mon 2/8/2021

Act
Researched and created an initial list of simple questions and answers
Reflect
This week I started to input some simple questions and answers into a newly built, custom array.
Some examples of these simple questions were “what is your name?” and “how old are you?”,
which would help to create a deeper sense of human interaction. Brad can respond to these
questions through either text or speech, which will provide a broad range of options for the user.
Currently, Brad sounds very robotic in his answers, which was to be expected and will be fixed
later during voice recording. The current focus is to get the textual content working. This way, it
will be easier to adjust the scope if I am running out of time. One particularly helpful feature about
the array is that it saves automatically, so I do not have to keep saving it manually. My plan is to
continue to input the simple questions and answers for the rest of the week, which will help me get
a good base before starting to incorporate the counselling aspects of the project.
Plan
Continue to input simple Q&A. Fix any bugs that I may come across.

Week 4B - Fri 6/8/2021
Act
Continued to build simple Q&A.
Reflect
This week I continued to input the simple questions and answers, as per my plan. I found an
efficient method of doing this, which was to take a few questions and answers from the pre-
recorded database and put that into my custom one. Of course, I tweaked these answers in order to
make them original and more suited for a counselling environment. The main purpose of having
these human aspects at the start is to ensure that the user feels comfortable in this environment. The
progress of the simple questions and answers section is that it’s almost done, but it could use a bit
more work. Therefore, I have planned to finish this section over the weekend.
I also ran into the issue of not being able to do content development using field research from the
school and other schools. I, therefore, modified the scope of my project to build content using
online research. Although this will reduce the quality of the content, this can be enhanced later
when access to field data is available, which is most likely after the project deadline, as the
lockdown dates keep changing due to factors beyond my control.
Plan
Finalise the simple Q&A section for the project. Fix any bugs that I may come across.

Week 5 – Finish building the initial textual content for the counselling Q&A

Week 5A - Mon 9/8/2021

Act
Continued working on the text-based initial Q&A section of the Virtual Human software. Started
inputting the slightly more complex elements of the Q&A section.
Reflect
Over the weekend, I finished and finalised the simple questions and answers section of the array, as
per my plan. This week I started inputting slightly more complex elements into the questions and
answers. My ongoing discussions with the school counsellors helped me a lot in this area. While I
was doing this, I realised a massive issue: I could not predict the follow-up question which created
problems with sequencing. Therefore, I decided to make unstructured and unsequenced ones for
now and will research using artificial intelligence components to sequence these later. Adjusted the
plan accordingly by adding a section for ‘research and integration’.
Plan
Continue inputting the initial elements of the Q&A in an unsequenced manner (for now). Fix any
bugs that I may come across. Research on how to sequence them. Also, research if variables can be
done.

Week 5A - Fri 13/8/2021
Act
Continued inputting the Q&A.
Reflect
This week, I finalized the initial text-based Q&A content. I decided to put the research for artificial
intelligence on hold since I need to finalize all the content prior to that. This will help to maximize
the time and resource efficiency of the project. As a result of this, there were more answers than
questions, and I was also mostly putting in the information which I received from my chats with the
school counsellors. Most of these questions and answers are yet to be linked and the plan is updated
accordingly by adding a section for ‘research and integration’.
Plan
Fix any bugs that I may come across. Research on how to sequence them. Also, research if
variables can be done.

Week 6 – Research integration of text-based counselling Q&A for the prototype

Week 6B - Mon 16/8/2021

Act
Started research on the integration of text-based content using artificial intelligence
Reflect
I decided to dedicate this week to research the integration using artificial intelligence. The primary
reason for the research was to increase my knowledge of artificial intelligence to resolve the
sequence of questions and answers from the template. I went to the website ‘Confluence’ to
research this since Confluence has a large collection of different sites, files and reports all related to
Software and IT. However, it was not very helpful since most sites mainly talked about the basics
of how to use the module. I discussed the issue with the University of Southern California (Institute
of creative technology) and have few different options to try. For example, A question like “I
understand, assignments can be difficult. Would you like to talk about it?” can be sequenced with
potential choices the artificial intelligence will be able to work with. I will just have to try a few
different options to see which one works better. I am also planning on checking out their YouTube
channel and other associated sites for more information and the decision on proposed solutions will
need to be ‘on hold’ until then.
Plan
Continue to research the array feature (YouTube). Fix any bugs that I may come across.

Week 6B - Fri 20/8/2021

Act
Finished research on arrays.
Reflect
This week, I finished watching the university’s YouTube videos. Unfortunately, these were very
similar to the sites on Confluence in the sense that it was very basic, and it did not reveal how to
structure questions and answers. I then tried a few of the options suggested by the university and
have selected one which is working for now. I will create a copy of the original content and
templates so that any rollbacks are easier. I will use my proposed solution to structure all the
information that currently exists before inputting more information since this will provide greater
process and time efficiency.
Plan
Start structuring all the information based on the artificial intelligence solution. Fix any bugs that I
may come across. Start to put in even more complex Q&A.

Week 7 – Start building complex textual content for the counselling Q&A

Week 7A - Mon 23/8/2021

Act
Finished structuring and sequencing initial text-based Q&A.
Reflect
It took almost all weekend, but I finally managed to structure and sequence the already existing
information in the questions and answers. I then started to do more complex questions and answers,
with more emphasis on the counselling communication, and the tone and language that counsellors
generally use. The initial plan was to do the field research by talking to students from different
schools. However, that wasn’t possible due to the lockdown and therefore the plan was adjusted to
use research and counsellor inputs. In order to do this, I used the information that I received from
the school counsellors and did further research to make it authentic and lifelike. I am planning to
continue doing this research as I go about my project.
Plan
Continue to build on complex Q&A and research. Fix any bugs that I may come across.

Week 7A - Fri 27/8/2021

Act
Continued to do the complex Q&A. Did research in conjunction with this.
Reflect
I continued inputting the complex questions and answers into the template this week, and also
conducted research into counselling in conjunction with this. I did this research primarily to know
how to communicate effectively in a counselling environment in absence of the field data. The
product is starting to come together. I think I might be getting to the stage where I could potentially
add some gestures and other nonverbal actions, but this will be prioritized after the integration of
text and voice-based content.
Plan
Continue to do this complex Q&A. Continue to do this kind of research in conjunction with Q&A.
Fix any bugs that I may come across.

Week 8B - Mon 30/8/2021

Act
Continued building text-based complex Q&A template
Reflect
I continued inputting the questions and answers into the template. I feel like at the current rate, I
might be able to finish the questions and answers section by the end of this week. I also did the
research into communication in a counselling environment in conjunction with this as well. I am
planning to continue this activity for the remainder of the week to ensure completion this week.
Plan
Finish building text-based complex Q&A into the template.

Week 8B - Fri 3/9/2021

Act
Finished and finalised text-based complex Q&A template.
Reflect
This was a key milestone as now we have a fully functional product using text-based input which I
can now enhance to add more features such as voice-based interaction. The other major component
of the project that needs to be addressed is the recording of my voice over the robotic one that
exists currently and its integration. I can now do that since I have the finalized template for the text-
based Q&A. Since I have a lot of content in this file, the recording of my voiceover might take a
long time. I will also need a quiet place to do it so that no background noise is present when people
are using the product.
Plan
Start working on voice-based content to replace the robotic voice in the product.

Week 9 – Start working on voice-based content for initial Q&A

Week 9A - Mon 6/9/2021

Act
Started to record the voiceover.
Reflect
I started to record my voiceover today. It was quite difficult since, as stated before, I needed a quiet
place to record my voice in, but occasionally some background noise would still get picked up by
the microphone. Moreover, I had to do multiple takes of one answer since sometimes it didn’t come
out right, or the microphone didn’t really pick it up, or I read the line wrong etc. I feel like the more
I record, the more comfortable I will get with this process which will provide process efficiency.
The initial plan was to use different voice actors to create a broader range of personas for the user
to interact with which wasn’t possible due to the lockdown and associated coordination challenges.
I, therefore, updated the scope of the project to change the number of voice actors from 4 to 1
(myself) in order to make it achievable in the given timeframe. I also de-scoped the facial
recognition feature due to the inability to collect field data due to the lack of real-life face to face
interactions. Additional features such as more voice actors and facial recognition can be added post
the project once lockdown restrictions are lifted. The project focus is on ensuring a working
product that can allow easy addition of voice and text content later on.
Plan
Continue recording the voiceover.

Week 9A - Fri 10/9/2021

Act
Continued recording the voiceover.
Reflect
I am still not very comfortable recording my voiceover, as this background noise still sometimes
gets picked up, but I am getting better at managing that. I was reading the lines and enunciating the
words much better this time, and it took fewer tries than Monday (although it’s still taxing). This
should get easier with time. Made the adjustment in the plan to add an extra week to accommodate
this.
Plan
Continue recording the voiceover.

Week 10 – Continue working on the voice-based content for the initial Q&A

Week 10B - Mon 13/9/2021

Act
Continued recording the voiceover.
Reflect
I am becoming more accustomed and comfortable with the process of recording my voiceover. This
time, rather than recording it in my room, I went to another room that usually has less background
noise. In this arrangement, I was able to record a lot of voiceover material with fewer distractions
due to background noise. I was also reading the lines and enunciating the words much more
effectively than last time. There is still quite a bit to do, considering I have to record over 150
different voice clips, but I should be able to get this done before the submission deadline. The
adjustment in the plan to add an extra week for voice recording that was taken last week will help
greatly with this.
Plan
Continue to record the voiceover.

Week 10B - Fri 17/9/2021

Act
Continued to record the voiceover. Learned about ‘Study Skills’.
Reflect
As stated on Monday, I am getting much better at recording the voiceover, and the strategy of
doing it in the new room was highly effective. I also learned about Study Skills in class today,
which taught me the importance of time management and organisation, and also various strategies
to achieve these. I still have some more voice recordings to do, so I think I will need to finalise
those over the holidays. I will also have to record a video demonstration of the Virtual Human
Interface for submission, which I am also planning to do over the holidays. I am also planning to
descope the hand gestures from the project as this will take a lot of time and I do not think I will be
able to achieve this in the given timeframe.
Plan
Continue to record the voiceover. Record the video demonstration of the Virtual Human Interface.

Term 4
Week 1 – Finalising the Submission

Week 1A - Mon 4/10/2021

Act
Was able to create 4 out of the 6 files for submission. Finalised these.
Reflect
Over the holidays I was able to create and finalise 4 out of the 6 files that will need to be submitted
by the end of next week. These five files included the project outline, the 300-word research
overview, the different planning, critical and creative thinking strategies, the entire questions and
answers module. The two remaining files were the video demonstration of the product, and the
journal entries. I still have to do the journal entries for next week, which is why that has not been
completed. As for the video demonstration, I first need to find someone to help, since I have
already recorded the dialogues with my voice. If I were to use my voice for the demonstration as
well, that might confuse the audience. Then I would have to come up with a script, since I was not
able to test my product with a wide variety of people due to lockdown. Therefore, I aim to get these
two things finalised by the end of this week, so that the video demonstration can be completed and
finalised.
Plan
Find someone to help record the video demonstration. Create a script for the demonstration.

Week 1A - Fri 8/10/2021

Act
Completed the video demonstration.
Reflect
Over the course of the week, I was able to find someone who would help record the demonstration,
and I also created a script for that. I started to work on the script right away, since that did not
depend on whether I found someone or not. Once I created the script (which can be seen at the
bottom of the Questions and Answers module file), I decided to find someone who would help out
with recording the video. I ended up choosing my mother, since she was willing to help and it
would not involve the extra coordination it would take if I asked one of my friends, since they
would then have to come over to my place. The recording took approximately 5 minutes, and it
turned out very nice. The only thing remaining for next week will be the video editing section,
which will provide smooth transitions and an interesting intro and outro title, as well as the
accreditation to the University of Southern California’s Institute of Creative Technologies. And, of
course, finalising the journal entries.
Plan
Complete the video editing section of the video demonstration, finalise it. Finalise the journal
entries. Submit all 6 files.

Task Priority (1-3, 1 being highest)

Journal Entry 1

Week 2 – Submission

Week 2B - Mon 11/10/2021

Act
Completed and finalised the video demonstration.
Reflect
Using iMovie, a video editing software, I was able to record the product demo and add intro and
conclusion. This completed the video demonstration of the product. The final thing is to submit all
the 6 files into Google Classroom, and I am well in time for that.
Plan
Submit all 6 files into Google Classroom.

Week 2B - Fri 15/10/2021

Act
Submitted all 6 files into Google Classroom.
Reflect
ILP was such a fun experience for me. I learnt a lot during the process, which I feel will help me
greatly in the future. Skills like time management, chunking, prioritisation, evaluation, and various
critical and creative thinking strategies will be useful to me in the coming years, whether it be the
preparation for the HSC, or getting a job. I also learned the process of creating a product, which
goes through three main phases: discovery, creation, and distribution. The project pitch assignment,
in Term 1, helped me grasp the aspects of what makes a good pitch, and how I can present this
information to make it engaging for the audience. During the preparation for the interview, in Term
2, I picked up skills which I can use when I have to interview for jobs. Finally, for the final
submission, I discovered the high level of depth that is required when completing a product. Not

also taught me the skill of collaboration. Throughout the process of creating my product, I was
collaborating with the University of Southern California’s Institute of Creative Technologies.
