a. Why did the catholic church actively oppose the passing of the Rizal bill?

- During the 1955 Senate election, the church charged Recto with being a communist and an
anti-Catholic. After Recto's election, the Church continued to oppose the bill mandating the reading of
Rizal's novels Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo, claiming it would violate freedom of conscience
and religion.

b. What provision from Rizal bill allowed the government to approve it that answers the arguments
provided by the Catholic Church?

- Republic Act No. 1425, known as the Rizal Law, mandates all educational institutions in the
Philippines to offer courses on the Life Works and Writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me
Tángere and El Filibusterismo, Authorizing the Printing and Distribution Thereof, and for Other Purposes.

c. Did the church’s views on the study of Jose Rizal’s life and works changed over the years? Why or why
not?

- In my own opinion, I do think that the church’s that opposed the study of Rizal’s life and works
in the past are now changing or it might already been change because throughout the years, Rizal’s
works have greatly influences Filipinos and is now sharing it to others even the ones who are the
descendant of those who are opposing the study of Rizal in the past.

a. What is the Rizal Law all about?

- The Rizal Law, officially designated as Republic Act No. 1425, is a Philippine law that mandates
all educational institutions in the Philippines to offer courses about José Rizal.

b. Why so we need to study the Rizal Law?

- It is important to study the life of Jose Rizal because of his input towards the independence of
Philippines. He chose to fight for his country through knowledge and the power of letters. 

c. What can you benefit from studying Jose Rizal’s life and works?

- It benefits me by being knowledgeable about what has happened in the past and how we
Filipinos take stand for our people. One example of that is Rizal’s battle for our fellow Filipino that are
suffering at that time and that gives me the courage to take lead of groups and help other fellow
Filipinos for the betterment of our country.
3. Why did Rizal consider Cervantes ‘the best writer of art and virtue’ in his literary piece, “The council of
the Gods (El Consejo del los Dioses)?” Justify your answer in no more than three (3) sentences.

- Rizal considered Cervantes because it is “the magic hand that strongly guides human passions,"
and "the whip which punishes and corrects without bloodshed.” It is said that maybe Rizal is implying
that the Philippines needed its Cervantes when he [Cervantes] praised the Spaniard for what he did in a
society ruled by "the obscurity of intelligence."

4. What drove the Filipinos to actively pursue Rizal’s literary works in their quest for national identity?
Justify your answer in no more than three (3) sentences.

- The Word Quest for national identity answers why Filipinos want to pursue Rizal’s literary
works because we want to know what we have fought for and also by knowing our past and finding our
real identity without the power of Spain that backed and controlled us in the past.

READING It is said that in the mid-1950s, Jose Rizal was a hot topic sixty years after
his execution regarding the inclusion of the study of his life and works in
the curricula of all public and private schools, colleges, and universities.
THE
INTRODUCTION Having a famous reputation because of his novels like the El
Filibusterismo, Noli Me Tangere and many more of his works, he’s life and
works are barely known by people. Now the Republic Act No. 1425 or
what we know as the Rizal law, where it aims to give appreciation to the
life of the national hero and his works. But before that law has been
approved, there were some who are opposed on the idea of letting
people know of Rizal’s works. They said that his writings can be
interpreted in different ways, depending on the context being picked up
as it was being read. Specifically, the Catholic Church was the one who
opposed it because they said that Rizal’s harsh criticisms at friar abuses,
simony and other practices were the rants of a heretic and needs it to be
buried in the past.

How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?


This promotes my nationalism by being proud of having someone who
protected our country and while knowing that there are those who
oppose the Rizal law at first and has now been approved because of the
people’s unity in wanting to know more about Rizal’s life and works make
me proud to be a part of this country.

How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?


By making me feel proud on our country and it’s past, it makes me more
devoted to help it and make it grow even more with our fellow Filipino
people.

How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?


It promotes volunteerism to me by inspiring me to become a leader and
help my fellow Filipinos know their rights and help them know that even
in the past, we Filipinos have a unity or a bond that helps us grow even
more.
