•Florence Nightingale was the first women to have great


influence over nursing in India and has a close knowledge of
Indian conditions, especially army.

•In 1854 the government sanctioned a training school for


midwives in madras.

•St Stephens Hospital at Delhi was the first one to begin


training the Indian girls as nurses in 1867.

•In 1871 the first school of nursing was started in government


general hospital, Madras with 6 months diploma midwives
program with four midwife students.

•Between 1800 to 1900 many schools under either


missions or government were started in various parts
of India.

•In 1905 association of nursing superintendents was


formed.

•In 1908 trained nurses association of India was


formed.

•In 1909 Bombay presidency nursing association was formed.

•In 1911 South Indian Board was established INAI affiliated to


International Council of Nurses.

•In 1918 trained schools were started for health visitors and dais at
Karachi and Delhi. Two English nurses Ms.Griffin and Ms.Graham were
appointed to give training and supervise the students.

•In 1926 madras state formed the first registration council to provide
basic standards in education and training

•In 1942 the Auxiliary Nursing Service was established. One nursing
superintendent was appointed as nursing advisor at DGHS,Government
of India to organize nursing services.

•1n 1943 establishment of school of nursing


administration for military nursing services health
survey and development committees constituted by the
government of India.

•CMC Vellore and Madras General hospital started


courses to train nurses in 1943.

•In 1946 Bhore committee submitted report, recommendations


made on improvement of various aspects of nursing
profession: Nursing education, working conditions, nursing
services in hospital and community and deputy nurses for
higher education to abroad.

•Establishment of the college of nursing at Delhi (Rajkumari


Amrit Kaur College of Nursing)under the union ministry of
Health to start university nursing education program for the
first time in India leading to Bachelor degree in nursing.

•In 1947 Indian Nursing Council Act was passed (13/12/1947)


on the basis of recommendations of Bhore Committee.

•Degree program was started in Vellore in 1947.

•In 1948 the first meeting of INC was held.

•In 1950 INC took decision to establish ANM program to meet


the requirement of workers in nursing.

•In 1953 Ms.Edith Buchanan,Vice Principal,RAK College of


Nursing was sent to Columbia university to earn doctorate in
education through WHO fellowship.

•In 1954 Government of India constituted Shetty committee to


review conditions of services, emoluments etc of the nursing
profession .Shetty committee report was published,
recommended nursing staff norms of hospital, community and
other improvements in nursing.

•In 1955 establishment of child guidance clinic at RAK


College of Nursing for providing services and
strengthening community health nursing and pediatric
nursing.

•Ms.Margaretta Craig,Principal,College of Nursing, Delhi


attended ICN meeting in France to present paper on the
need for nursing research in India in 1955.

•In 1956 Ms Adrenwala was appointed as the nursing advisor


to government of india.The development of nursing in India
was greatly influenced by Christian missionaries, and by the
international agencies such as WHO, Red
cross,UNICEF,UNSAID etc.

•In 1959 Ms.Edith Buchanan succeeded in establishing


Masters of nursing degree program at RAK College of
Nursing, New Delhi under university of Delhi.

• In 1961 Mudaliar Committee report published and made


some recommendations to improve nursing professions.

•In 1963 a WHO assisted technical project was


undertaken at the INC to revise the GNM course.

•In 1965 a WHO publication on “guide for school of


nursing” in India was published.

•In 1966 TNAI established research section under the


chairmanship of Ms.Margarata Craig.TNAI conducted
time study with the cooperation of Ms.Anna
Gupta,Principal,RAKCollege of Nursing under the
supervision of Dr,Sulochana Krishnan.

•In 1976 Dr.Marie Farell and Dr.Aparna Badhuri of RAK


College of Nursing conducted a seminar on research for educationalists
at Delhi,Mussorie and Yarcaid to strengthen the nursing research in
India.

•In 1978 government nurses association of Karnataka was established.

•In 1986 the nursing research society of India was established to


promote research within and around nursing environment
Dr.(Mrs.)Inderjit Walia was founder president,Mrs.Uma Hunda was its
secretary.

•MPhil in nursing program was started at RAK College of Nursing under


Delhi university in 1986.

•In 1987 reports of the expert committee(Bajaj


Committee) on health and manpower planning, production
and management was published. This committee also
dealt with nursing service conditions, emoluments etc.

•In 1992 PhD in nursing program was started at RAK


College of Nursing.
