WHAT’S IN
List ten important concepts related to last week’s lesson which is about geothermal and hydroelectric
power plants and water resources. Use the spaces provided below for your answer.
1. Geothermal energy refers to the heat that comes from the subsurface of the Earth. It is contained
in the rocks and fluids beneath the Earth’s crust and can be found as far down to the Earth’s molten
rock, magma.
2. Hydropower or hydroelectric power is one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy
which uses the natural flow of moving water to generate electricity.
3. The kinetic energy generated by moving water has been used to drive watermills. Hydropower
plants now are mainly used to generate electricity.
4. Water is undeniably very important for our survival.
5. Water is very important to man because a human adult body is composed of 60% water
distributed in the brain, heart, lungs, skin, muscles, kidneys and bones.
6. Water is also used for recreational activities.
7. Advantages of Hydroelectric Power is clean, cost-effective, storable and renewable source of
energy
8. Besides geothermal power, another main source of energy that the Philippines uses is
hydroelectric.
9. Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy- emits small amount of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide
10. Advantages of Geothermal Energy- Renewable and sustainable form of energy
ASSESSMENT 1: CAUSE AND EFFECT:
CAUSE EFFECT
1. Over application of fertilizers to Can lead to dangerous algal bloom which, when
increase yield. toxic, can shut down drinking water
2.Industrial activities Increase concentration of metals and
toxic chemicals; add suspended
sediments, increase temperature, and
lower dissolved oxygen.
3. Deforestation to make way for Huge contributor to sediment pollution
agriculture and development
4. Urban growth Changes of landscape as the clearance of forests,
the building of roads, and conversion of natural
landscape to farmland
5. sediments Damage to equipment used in water supply
installations and hydroelectric plants.
6. toxic chemicals Sickness, genetic disorders and death of
organisms.
7. Removal of mountain top to Degrade the drinking water resources of
reveal coal communities that live near the mining sites
8. pollutants from agricultural activities Harmful to water resources and aquatic
ecosystem.
9. Urban run-off Increased concentration of nutrients, sediments,
animal wastes, petroleum products and road salts
10. This is a natural instance , where perhaps Longtime drought
we humans do not have control of

ACTIVITY 5. ENUMERATION:
Human Activity Effect on Water and Soil Quality and Quantity

Fossil Fuel production Coal mining companies remove tops of mountains to reveal
coal can
also degrade the drinking water resources of communities that
live near the
mining sites.
Urban Growth Leads to changes of landscape as the clearance of forests, the
building of roads, and conversion of natural landscape to
farmland. These activities cause degradation of ecosystem that
houses water sources.
Misuse or excess use of fertilizers Increases the rate of soil degration by the destroying the soils
biological activity and builds up toxicities through incorrect
fertilizer use.
Deforestation Soil erosion
Agriculture Over-application of fertilizers to increase yields can lead to
dangerous algal bloom which, when toxic, can shut down
drinking water. Fertilizers not taken up by crops ends up as
run-off in streams, rivers and eventually lakes and oceans.
