Agreement between Verb and Subject
When two different nouns are used in a sentence for
same subject, singular noun is used.
When two nouns of the same meaning or different
meaning but used as a phrase in a sentence, singular
verb form is used.
➢ The leader and actor has won the election.
➢ The director and professor has resigned today.
➢ The speaker and artist mesmerized the audience.
❑ The profit and gain of this project is very lucrative.
❑ Slow and steady wins the race.
❑ Breakfast of bread and butter is available in all the
hostels.
When two or more singular nouns are connected in a
sentence by ‘’ or, either, neither, nor ’’ singular form
of verb is used.
When two or more different nouns are connected in a
sentence by ‘’ or, either, neither, nor ’’ verb is used as
per the subject that comes before it.
When two subjects are connected in a sentence by a
combination of’’Not only…….But also’’ verb is used as
per the subject that comes before it.
❑ Either Ali or he is to be present in office.
❑ Neither you nor Ahmad has started working.
❑ Aqsa or her friend gives suitable reply.
❑ No student or teacher was in favor of it.
▪ Either she or they are going by train.
▪ Either they or she has to ensure her presence.
▪ Either we or your principal is to get the credit of
our success.
▪ Neither she nor I am going put out with this insult.
o Not only they but also she was going to school.
o Not only the students but also the professors were
also furious at their rude behaviour.
o Not only farmers but also the executives are also
demanding this product.
When another subject of the sentence is connected
by conjunctions' 'as well as, together with, along
with, with, besides, in addition to,’’ in a sentence,
verb form is used as per subject of the sentence used
in the beginning.
When two different singular subjects are used and
connected by ‘’And’’ plural form is used.
When collective nouns like committee, jury,
parliament, council and team are used as a unit in a
sentence, singular form is used.
❑ Three white shirts in addition one black shirt have
been purchased by her.
❑ His car with all additional accessories is damaged
in flood water.
❑ He as well as his mentor is coming to see us.
▪ I and Khizar are friends.
▪ Ahmad and Ikram have become very naughty.
▪ He and his mother are fond of study.
o The committee has declared elections.
o The parliament is capable of making any law.
o The jury has take an important decision.

Plural comes with ‘’a number of’’ while ‘’the number
of’’ is followed by singular.
Scissors, spectacles, shoes, goggles, trousers, shorts
etc..looks plural and made up of two parts. Plural form
of the verb is used with them.
If ‘’pair’’ is used before them, then followed by
singular verb.
When a noun comes after’’more than one’’ singular
verb is used.
If noun comes between ‘’More------Noun than
one’’plural form is used.
❑ A number of girls like blue colour.
❑ A number of jobs are still pending.
➢ The number of competent doctor is decresing day

➢ The number of selected shirts is marked for sale.

When verbs like ‘’Dare’’ and ‘’need’’ are used in the
sentence as modals,it does not change to ‘’dares’’ or
‘’needs’’ even for single subject.
In imaginary sentences, plural verb is used even for
singular subjects.
Generic refrence with certain words like ‘’the rich, the
poor, the English, the French, the Polish, the young,
the old, the Indian’’make them plural and followed by
plural form.
It is incorrect to write’’the poors, the olds’’
When two different nouns are used for the same
person, singular form is used.
❑ He dare to criticize the minister.
❑ They dare not come here.
❑ He need not to call th doctor.
❑ She dare not utter a word to me
➢ I wish I were a king.
➢ If I were a bird, I would have flown in the sky.
➢ If I were in boarding school, I would have reached
my home.
❑ The rich are not always happy.
