O. DEMOGRAPHY

1. Population Growth

The population of Calbayog City grew by nearly double the population it attained in 1960
period. The city’s population growth is actually the lowest among the cities in Region 8. This is
due to the high out migration rate prevailing in the city caused mainly by lesser employment
opportunities. The actual census result of 2015 indicated a total population of 183,851 for the
City of Calbayog and with a projected population of 189,632 for the year 2017 with an average
annual growth rate of 1.62% .

Reflected in Table 39 is the actual and projected population of the city for the year 2015
and 2017 respectively:

2. Total number of Household

The household population of Calbayog is sparsely distributed among the 157 barangays
of the city with a total projected household of 38,389 for the year 2017.

3. Population Density

Calbayog City’s population density also rose significantly over the years in relation to its
population. From merely 0.9 persons per hectare of land in 1960, the population density jumped
to 2.4 person per hectare in 2000 and 2 persons for the year 2017. Despite the big improvements
attained during the period, the City of Calbayog is still the most sparsely populated city than any
other cities in Eastern Visayas.

Among the political districts, Tinambacan District is more densely populated with 2.4
persons per hectare, while Calbayog District has 1.8 person per hectare. Oquendo District has
the lowest density with only 1 person per hectare of land.

4. Sex Distribution

As of the year 2017 the City of Calbayog has a sex ratio of 105 males and 100 females,
indicating that there is predominance of male population in the city. This also suggests of
impending higher productivity rate of the city in the years to come, as males comprised majority
of the labor force.

5. Age Distribution

About 55 percent of the total population of Calbayog in 2000 belonged to 15 to 64 years


old bracket, and considered as the productive population or working age group. The age group
0 to 14 years old is the child and youth, and 65 years old and above, is considered as elderly,
which covered 41 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

The city’s total dependency ratio, as of 2000, reached to 82 percent, the highest among
cities in the region. The young dependency ratio and old dependency ratio covered 75 percent
and 5 percent respectively.

6. Migration

Calbayog City has been considered as an out-migration city. Most of the in-migrants are
domestic, mostly coming from neighboring island towns and municipalities and could be
considered as an inter rural-urban migration. Only less than 3 percent of the total population,
based on 1990 and 2000 figures, is considered migrants.

7. Marital Status

Majority of the city’s populace entered into marriages at age of 25 and above. Married
females slightly outnumbered males.

8. Mother Tongue

Waray is the most spoken dialect in the city of Calbayog. Based on 2010 total household
population, about 87 percent of the population spoke waray at early childhood, and Cebuano
ranked second which constituted only 11 percent.
