A. FARM AND FARMING

Have you ever visited a farm before?


Did you do farm work when you were young?
Would you like to live on a farm?
Do you think farming is important?

1. Yes … Actually, …
E.g: Have you ever visited a farm?
- Yes, I have, but to be honest it was a long time ago, when I was at school. We had a
school trip to a farm where they rear livestock, mainly cows and sheep, and we had a
chance to feed them. Actually, it was quite an eye-opener for me, as it was my first
time on a farm.
2. I reckon …. To my understanding …
E.g: Do you think farming is important?
- Absolutely, I reckon it’s the backbone of our economy. If we didn’t have farms, we
wouldn’t have any food and we would starve, I guess. To my understanding, it’s also a
key source of employment in many countries.

Vocabulary

- To rear = to breed, to raise, to help them grow


- An eye-opener = broaden your horizons, help you learn new things
- The backbone of = the strongest part of
- Starve = be very hungry

B. TREES

Do you like trees?


What kind of trees do you like the most?
Have you ever planted a tree?
What kind of trees are common in your country?

I. STRUCTURE

1. Yes, I’m not … but …

E.g: Do you like trees?


=> Absolutely, yes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a tree hugger, but trees are a thing of
beauty and essential for human life

- Don’t get me wrong = don’t misunderstand me


- A tree hugger = sb who is very interested in protecting the environment

2. Now you’re testing me

E.g: What kind of trees do you like the most?


=> Now you’re testing me … to be perfectly honest, I’m not very good at naming trees
even in my native language. I do like pine trees. I think they’re evergreen trees. You
know, the ones that don’t shed/lose their leaves.

- Evergreen = not shed/ lose their leaves


3. There are lots of … but ….

E.g: Have you ever planted a tree?


=> Personally, no. There are loads of trees in my garden but they were planted by my
parents/ the previous owners of the property a few years back.
- Back = ago

E.g: What kind of trees are common in your country?
=> I’m not sure if these trees are native to the UK but you tend to see a lot of cherry
trees. They’re stunningly beautiful and full of blossom in the springtime.

5. Firstly …, but more than that, …


E.g: What are the benefits of planting more trees?
=> Firstly, they are attractive, but more than that, they remove and store carbon from
the atmosphere, they slow down heavy rain and so reduce the risk of flooding,
enhance air quality and provide shade. There are countless/ innumerable positive
effects of planting more trees.
- Innumerable = too many to be counted

Vocabulary

- Now and again = sometimes


- By and large = overall, general speaking
- Hit the sack = go to bed
- Tend to = often
- An early riser = someone who gets up early
- The early hours = After midnight (12-6am)
- Peace and quiet
- Tired and groggy
- Out of sorts = under the weather = don’t feel very well
- Be used to + N/ V-ing = be familiar with
- Good to go = I am ready to begin
