Proper Waste Disposal

Introduction

Wood is the most used commodity in carpentry. While it is considered to be a

renewable resource, conservation is important for sustainable forestry and
environmental protection. Typical wood waste sources include wood crates and
pallets, construction and demolition of homes, landscaping of furniture, old films,
landscaping, branches cut from orchards and lumber mills, among others.

These wastes should be properly disposed of so these would not add up to the
piles of garbage that continue to harm the environment.

Discussion

What is proper handling of wastes?

Proper management of wastes requires a commitment to segregation. Pick out
materials that can be reused and recycled before you throw all your old stuff and
scraps into the landfill.
When it comes to getting rid of waste, for many reasons, it is extremely
necessary that you properly dispose of it.
Here are three major reasons why we should dispose of wood waste properly:
1) Helps protects environment
➢ Think about how much waste you, a single person, produce. You
can begin to imagine how much waste is created each day.
➢ We would not have the clean and refreshing atmosphere we have
today without the solid waste disposal system. One of the key
reasons we feel so strongly about proper waste management is its
positive contribution to the environment.
➢ Not only does it keep our streets free of any waste but it also
reduces any harmful waste disposal effects. If you follow proper
disposal of waste, you will give your junk to the correct location.
This goes beyond your typical garbage household and is also
critical for skipping bins.
➢ You will help us have a positive effect on the environment by using
the correct form of waste and following the guidelines. Instead of
forwarding it to the dump, we reuse what we can from your skips.

2) Improves health standards

➢ Not only does it help to keep the environment safe by
implementing waste management practices but it also makes the
general health standards of the community higher.
➢ Our world is safer with waste being properly disposed of and there
are less health risks and hazards around to affect us. This entails
not polluting our world and, instead, ensuring that our society
stays as safe as possible.
➢ It also reduces the chances of spreading illness and diseases
through the air. Thus, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases. It
also ensures that harmful materials, which can pollute our water
and discourage us from providing a safe water system, are not
taken into our waterways. It narrows down any toxins that might
soak into the soil and also removes toxic smells.

3) Support recycling materials
➢ Having appropriate methods of waste management available offers
recycling help and saves valuable materials.
➢ It is necessary for materials to be renewed for other purposes. This
not only gives it more use and prevents it from going to the landfill,
but can also limit the need for new materials to be made.
➢ Limiting the development of new products helps encourage
recycling and leads to less emissions from the production
processes.
➢ It is vital that proper methods of waste disposal are available, such
as green waste skips and other forms of waste, as it makes
recycling far easier for consumers to understand and organize for
businesses, such as ours.

Other reasons include:

Eliminating Waste
❖ Some waste generated in the process of construction can be eliminated. For
example, durable modular metal form systems for use in concrete
construction may be selected on the basis of being readily demountable and
reusable on other projects eliminating wood waste associated with formwork
fabricated of plywood and dimensional lumber. Elimination of waste can be
beneficial to reduce impacts on human health and the environment.

Minimizing Waste
❖ Some building-related waste can be minimized. For example, construction
products can be selected on the basis of its being designed and manufactured
to be shipped with minimal packaging. Consider also the selection and use of
recyclable materials and products that have potential to minimize waste.

Reusing Materials
❖ Some materials can be still be reused. For example, doors and windows in
good, resalable condition might substitute for new products, or be donated or
sold for use on another project—a form of beneficial reuse.
❖ Materials and products which cannot efficiently and effectively be eliminated,
minimized or reused ultimately are collected, and unless managed, will
probably be disposed at the lowest cost. In many areas of the country, disposal
fees at solid waste landfills are substantially higher than the cost of separation
and recovery, including the disposal cost for residues.

The 5S Approach

What is the 5S approach?

It is a concept and a way to organize
and control the workplace and workflow in
order to maximize productivity by
eliminating waste, improving flow and
decreasing the unreasonableness of the
operation. It is for improvement of working
environment. It is a housekeeping practice
by the Japanese for a productive
atmosphere at home and work and has now
become a popularized housekeeping guide
around the world. The 5S stand for five
Japanese words that constitute good
housekeeping.

Japanese English

Seiri Sort

Seiton Set in order/ Systematize

Seiso Shine/ Sweep

Seiketsu Standardize

Shitsuke Sustain/ Self-Discipine

S1. SEIRI (Sort)

➢ This is the task of identifying available files and materials and sorting
out what is necessary and what must be disposed.
➢ SEIRI, from the English word sort/sorting, means classifying,
separating the wanted and unwanted items or materials. It is
distinguishing what is necessary from unnecessary and then removing
what is unnecessary.

S2. SEITON (Set in Order/Systematized)

➢ It means putting all necessary item in proper order and in their proper
places. SEITON is arranging the necessary item in a neat and
systematic manner so that they can be easily retrieved when needed
and also easily returned after use.

6|P age
S3. SEISO (Sweep/Shine)
➢ It is an action to sweep your workplace thoroughly. Seiso is about
cleaning everything in the workplace carefully by removing the dirt,
soot, and dust and bringing it back to good condition.

S4. SEIKETSU (Sanitized/Standardized)

➢ It means high standard of good housekeeping. Seiketsu means setting
a standardized process to maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the
workplace. Procedures and schedules are established to ensure the
repetition of the first three “S”

S5. SHITSUKE (Self-discipline/Sustain)

➢ It is a stage where all member practice the 4S spontaneously and
willingly as a way of life and doing them daily as a matter of habit.
Discipline means doing things the way they are supposed to be done
and practicing the 5S spontaneously without being told or reminded of
the task.

Acknowledgment

The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt gratitude
to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to the successful
preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and distribution of the
Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all learning areas across grade
levels as a response to providing the learners with developmentally-appropriate,
contextualized and simplified learning resources with most essential learning
competencies (MELCs)-based activities anchored on the principles of guided learning
and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the writers
and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting their best efforts
to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the implementation of learning
delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully
evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly extending its

financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of these learning resources
for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close coordination with

the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval of the GLAKs and for
their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the learners
the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish the tasks and for
gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would not be

possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to serving our
Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!
