1. Formal communication is consisting of norms and rules. Differentiate the two. Cite
actual instances where these happened in your organizations.

Answer:
As stated in the discussion communication rules are standards that specifically set
forth in the policy and procedures handbook of the organizations. These are the strict
policies that need to be followed in a certain situation so that the process of solving or
gathering the data will be organized. While the communication norms are styles of
communication are deemed correct and respectful. This is a knowledgeable and cultural
entity, which is part of the process of cultural socialization. In the family and the society,
cultural norms are learned and are also based on ethnicity and race.
Like for example, in every school, bullying is highly condemned. So there is a
communication standard that if there is an incident of bullying whether it is physical, social,
gender biased or cyber bullying, teacher will bring the victim and perpetrator to the
guidance advocate of the school to properly resolve the incidents and will make a report
on incidents of bullying and retaliation and to be submitted after the end of the school year.
That is the set of rules need to be followed. But with the classroom norms of the teacher
all incidents are settled immediately, resolved it properly and make an agreement. If the
case is not severe or simple as name calling, the incidents is not properly record as they
resolve it quickly and there is no need to bring it t the guidance advocate. Teachers will
just report the incidents that are major in terms of its effect to the victims and there are
parents involve. With human considerations and school norms all incidents that can be
settled immediately are treated as part of the discipline of the students problem.

2. Discuss effective method of downward, upward and lateral communication that you
would apply if you were the supervisor during this time of pandemic.

Answer:
If I were the supervisor, method of downward is very effective as I can give
instructions to schools, school heads and teacher s with instructions that are supported with
DepEd Orders or Division Memo so that they can fill the power and authority of my
instruction on how to deliver the learning modalities during this pandemic. Use only the
appropriate learning modalities like modular approach, as we are in an island, we need to
follow the rules because it was mandated from the higher ups.
But downward communication has its limitations and Upward communication
comes in. As a supervisor I will listen to the suggestions of the teachers and school heads
on how they might implement these kind of learning modalities without breaking the major
rules stated by the department. All of their suggestions will be collected, and I will raise
during MANCOM so that they can change, insert or modify rules to more comfortable to
all employees to follow. As a supervisor I want establish trust, use multiple mediums, show
utility, and decrease barriers.
Now for the lateral communication as any mandated instruction have given to us, I
must improve horizontal/lateral communication is to increase lateral understanding. I will
set an example so that all will be encouraged. As described in the discussion, we end up
wasting time and resources, duplicate work and/or decision making that negatively
influence other departments if we do not grasp what other parts of the districts do." The
lateral understanding of all people in a district should become a priority from top to bottom.
So as the supervisor, I would suggest having a meeting with all the school heads to discuss
the procedures to be followed by all schools in giving their data in an organized way and
right on time. Their will be one assigned in monitoring of all outputs and another for
consolidating the reports. In this way there is a lateral communication to all, and no one
would be lost of instruction and information, and it will not waste and duplicate their works.

3. If your supervisor asked you about her/his performance, which has been
problematic; would you tell him the truth? Obviously saying that communication
distortion is always unethical, would be easy, but is that really the case? Can
communication distortion be ethical?

Answer:
If I was asking by my supervisor about his performance, I will tell him the truth.
Yes, you read it. But I will first tell him about a commendation for all the good things he
has, his achievements and good character traits because everyone has its strengths in
managing an organization. Now for his weaknesses, I will not tell him about the
problematic situations on how he manages the organizations on a disrespectful manner.
Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it isn’t going' away. People always
favor honesty, even if it is not always what they want to hear. Maybe it is difficult for me
to say all the problematic things in his time of management as it will caused also maybe a
problem for me. It might give him a bad impression to me as I do not favor him. So I will
just give him an honest opinion, not totally all problems like personal matters. Its just that
I will focus on the problems that really affects me or our organizations. I would say that
there are things that need to improve in his kind of managing the organizations as there
some reports, questions and arguments coming from other employees. By telling him my
own sentiments, I am not telling him to change immediately, but hopefully it will sort as a
feedback coming from his people and make a right decision in managing our organizations.
Correct communication will result to good responses, because if we just take silence of all
things without telling it on a proper manner and time, all things that are not right will be
recurring situations. It will just affect the communication and relationships of all its people.
