Subject Title: Geographic Information Systems Subject Code: GIS443

INTRODUCTION:
One must learn the basics of map design in order to accurately and correctly display information on a map document.
These fundamental skills include working with existing GIS data and maps and building maps commonly used in practice.
The topics covered in Week 2 will enable you to symbolize maps, create custom numeric classes, create normalized and
density maps.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this topic, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the essential properties of a well-made map.
2. Symbolize maps using qualitative attributes.
3. Symbolize maps using quantitative attributes.
4. Create custom numeric classes.
5. Create normalized and density maps.
6. Create dot density maps.
7. Create group layers.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
• Review the power point presentations presented in class.
• Complete the following tutorials:
 2-1 Creating point and polygon maps using qualitative attributes
 2-2 Creating point and polygon maps using quantitative features
 2-3 Creating custom classes for a map
 2-4 Creating custom colors for a map
 2-5 Creating normalized and density maps
 2-6 Creating dot density maps
 2-8 Creating group layers and layer packages

1. Successfully complete and submit for evaluation via OneDrive, Assignment 2: Assignment 2-1, “Creating a map
showing schools in New York City by type”.
