Name of object: Mayana plant

Location: Home
Mathematics Concept(s): Reflection Symmetry
Explanation: To those who do not know it, it is a plant obviously and it is called mayana plant
and it is also called Coleus Blumei. Its leaves are usually colored yellow, green, pink, and red but
the most common one is purple. This mayana plant is one of the best examples of reflection
symmetry because if you can see it, it is identical both sides and it does not change no matter
what angle you go. According to sonyasgarden.com, another scientific study revealed that
mayana has compounds that act fights against bacteria.

Name of the Object: Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina)

Location: Central East, Bauang, La Union
Mathematics Concept(s): Fractals
Explanation: Lady fern is an example of Special Patterns called Fractals. Lady fern is a large
feathery fern widely cultivated for ornamentation. (Britannica) Lady fern has the same shape of
leaves from the top to the bottom. The leaves are built from big to smaller scales.

Name of object: Millipede

Location: Acao Bauang La Union
Mathematics Concept(s): Glide Symmetry
Explanation: Millipede legs are an example of glide symmetry. They are exactly the same on the
other side leg. Reflection over the other side and translation over the line or given distance in
line. As you see, millipede has two side legs that look exactly the same, each side has multiple
legs they are translation.

Name of object: Clouds

Location: Lingsat, City of San Fernando, La Union
Mathematics Concept(s): Fractals
Explanation: Fractals are patterns made up of similar forms of various sizes layered on each
other. Clouds are one example. Clouds are mathematical concepts with no natural dimension,
and their shape is undefined. They are self-similar in that they reoccur on any dimension.

Name of object: Catharanthus Roseus

Location: Viernes Residence at Palali Norte Sta. Lucia Ilocos Sur
Mathematics Concept(s): Rotational/ Radial Symmetry
Explanation: Catharanthus Roseus is an example of rotational symmetry because it can be
rotated and it still looks the same. The catharanthus roseus has a central point where if you rotate
it, it will match its own shape. It has 5 flower petals arranged around the center of flower, so it
has 5-fold rotational symmetry which is 72 degrees. If you were going to ask where did I get 72
degrees, I divided 360 degrees by 5, which is the petals of the flower.
