Guideline to use Water Jet Paver for the laying of

Road Base Material.

1.0 Introduction.
Voegele Paver model Super 1800-3 AB600-3 TP2 is a paver specifically designed and configured to
pave both asphalt and road base material. This paver is also named as Water Jet Paver (paver) due to
it capability to add water into the road base material. The other additional features built in this paver
are water spraying system, high compaction screed, heavy duty wear and tear protection system and
two sides level control system. These additional features are meant for improving the laying and
compaction of pave materials.

2.0 Operating guideline.

The operating guideline for the additional features which is the high compaction screed, heavy duty
wear and tear protection system and level control system are published in the standard paver’s
operating manual. The operating guideline for water spraying system is elaborated in this manual.

The component in the water spraying system are water supplies system, water spraying rate control
and water mixing process.
2.1 Water supplies system.
a) Supply source.
The water supplies system is the component that uses to supply the required water to be
added into the road base materials. A standard external water pressure pump with a 5 bars
pressure capable to provides up to 450L per minute capacity is recommended. The water
pressure pump is recommended to be placed at the water tanker, using standard 50mm
diameter hose connecting the water supply to the paver.

pump.

b) In flow control.
Water was piped by using a 50mm fiber reinforced PVC hose from the pressure pump to
all the metal connection junction. A manual ball cock valve is installed immediately after
the pressure pump. This manual ball cock valve has a function for manually close, open
and adjust the inflow of the water supply pending the need during the paving operation.

An electric Solenoid Diaphragm Valve is used as an on and off valve for the water supply
to the system. This electric auto switch valve will allow in flow of water when the paver
start moving and vise versal. It is located after the manual ball cock valve and before the
water flow meter.

auto switch on-off valve.

2.2 Water spraying rate control.

a) Water flow meter.
A water flow meter is used to measure the quantity of water being channel into the
system. The measuring unit is in liter/minute. The flow meter is located after the electric
auto switch on-off valve and the purpose is to display the amount of water being channel
into the system.

Figure 4 : Water flow meter.

b) Water spraying rate.

The water supply rate is based on the below formulae:

Water supply rate = Optimum moisture content – stockpile moisture.

In order to calculate the amount of water to be added, the below step by step processes
is essential:
a) Calculate the quantity of road base material laid over a period of time. The quantity
of road base materials is calculated based on the volumetric dimension and corelated
with the time used to lay this material in weight over a period of time.
b) Water flow meter is used to measure the quantity of water supply in a correlated
period of time.
c) From both the correlation of a and b, with the OMC and stockpile moisture collected
from the laboratory test, the water supply rate is calculated.

2.3 Water mixing process.

A set of specially design water spraying nozzle is used to spray the water into the road base
material at the screed tunnel. A small ball cock valve is placed at each of the nozzle to serve
as a manual control on the inflow of water.

cock valve at the screed tunnel.

All the nozzles will be spraying the water simultaneously when the road base material is being
channel into the screed from the supply conveyor. Mixing of water with the road base
material will take place at this location and also when it was channel and distributed
throughout the screed length.

3.0 Application.
The water jet paver is an upgraded track paver suitable for the laying of asphalt and road base material.
The additional of water spraying system built with the measuring and spray rate control system enable
the paver to add the required amount of water into the road base material. In addition, the Water
Jet paver is also specifically equipped with the Tamping and Pressure Bar (TP2) screed that enhanced
the pre compaction of the road base material. With the additional features, the Water Jet Paver is
capable not only to lay asphalt, it is also able to lay road base material as well as the Wet Mix Macadam.
