A.GRAMMAR
Untuk menyatakan suatu ‘existence’ atau adanya sesuatu, maka kita gunakan kata:
There + Auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu)
Two book are on the table now.
(Dua buah buku di atas meja sekarang)
Dari segi tata bahasa, kalimat di atas sudah benar, sebab sudah mempunyai subject dan predicate,
namun kurang lazim digunakan. Sebagai gantinya, untuk menyatakan adanya dua buah buku di atas
meja sekarang, kita katakan dengan:
There are two books on the table now.
(Ada dua buah buku di atas meja sekarang).
There is a book on the table now.
Are five books on the table now.
Was a book on the table yesterday.
Were three books on the table yesterday.
Will be a book on the table tomorrow.
Will two books on the table tomorrow.
Has been a book on the table since 7 a.m
Have been three book on the table since 7 a.m
Notes:

 Yang menjadi pedoman dalam pemakaian bentuk there is, there are, there was, there were,
dan sebagainya, adalah jumlah benda dan keterangan waktunya.
 Jika tidak ada keterangan waktu, kalimat selalu dianggap dalam bentuk Present Tense.
 Pola pemakaian “there is” dapat digambarkan sebagai berikut:

B.READING COMPREHENSION
Answer the questions and read the text.
When you have minor health problem, do you usually go to the doctor, get something from the
drugstorw, ofuse home remedy?
GRANDMA KNOWS BEST
When people have a cold, afever, or the flu, they usually gp to the doctor for the help or they get
some medicine from the drugstore. But many people also use home remedies for illnesses.
Lots of people drink hot chicken soup when they have a col. They find it clears the head and nose.
Some people rub oil on the chest for a cold. Other people drink q mixture of red pepper, hot
water, sugar, lemon juice, and milk or vinegar. Here are some simple homw remedies.
Bee Stings and Insect Bites: Wash the sting or bite. Put some meat tenderizer on a handkerchief
and then put it on the bite for a half an hour.
Burns: Put the bur under cold water or put a cold handkerchief on it. But don’t put ice on the
burn.
Coughs: Drink warm liquids or take some honey.
Indigestion: Drink some water with a teaspoon of baking soda in it.
Insomnia: Drink a large glass of warm milk.

A. CONVERSATION
Eating in a restaurant
Mr. Dion is in a restaurant. He is going to have a lunch there. Here is the dialogue between
Mr. Dion and a waiter.
Waiter: Would you like to have lunch, Sir?
Mr. Dion: Yes. Can I have the menu, please?
Waiter: Here you are, Sir. What would you like to have, Sir?
Mr. Dion: Rice, chicken, fish and soup.
Waiter: Would you like some dessert, Sir?
Mr. Dion: May I see the menu again,please?
Waiter: Yes, please. The chocolate cake is delicious.
Mr. Dion: No, thanks. I’d rather have cocktail.
Waiter: I’m afraid there isn’t any more.
Mr. Dion: How about some fresh fruit?
Waiter: Fine, I’ll bring your order right away.
Look at these sentences.
Can I have the menu, please?

Exercise 1. Fill the blanks with a suitable “There is” form!

Example: ___ a dog in the garden now.

Exercise 4. Make question starting with ‘How many’ for the words “ in underline”.
Example: There are five books on the table now.

5. There have been six students absent lately.
Exercise 5. Translate into goof English!
