THE TECHING PROFESSION

Prof. Education 4
Module 2- Activity 2

- The real test of good teaching is a valid answer to the question:” Have the
students learned the lessons?”

TEACHING AS A SYSTEM
- Teaching as a system requires an understanding of the role of the more
mature, experienced members of society in stimulating, directing, managing
and guiding the immature and inexperienced members in their adjustment to
life.
- The processing takes place in the school setting with the teacher playing a
major role in instructing so that they can develop into upright and useful
members of society and well-adjusted citizens with wholesome personalities
imbued with:
Love of country
The duties of citizenship
Moral character
Personal discipline
Scientific, technological and
Vocational efficiency
- The approach is HOLISTIC.

Activity Question # 6
3. Describe and define an individual who is the product of a holistic
development because of the result of good teaching and learning?

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION
The following are the characteristics of a profession (Gugget & Stinnet,
1960) as propounded by the National Education Association of the United States.
-A profession involves activities essentially intellectual.
- A profession commands a body of specialized knowledge.
- A profession requires extended professional preparation (as contrasted
with solely general).
-A profession demands a continuous in-service growth.
- A profession affords a life career and permanent membership.
- A profession sets up its own standards.
- A profession exalts service above personal gain.
- A profession has a strong, closely knit, professional organization.

Teaching shows that it meets most of the criteria and exhibits the
characteristics of a profession. Teaching has been considered legally and
formally in the Philippines with the promulgation of Presidential Decree 1006
in 1977- the Decree professionalizing teaching-recognizing the vital role of
teachers in nation-building especially in the development of proper attitudes
among the citizenry as they have continuing interaction with children and
young people.

Activity Question # 7
4. Concretize in an explanation how teaching as a profession involves activities
essentially intellectual and requires a body of specialized knowledge. While the
cliché maybe acceptable that anybody can be a teacher, but when can the title
“professional” be ascribed to a person engaged in the activity of teaching?

Aspects of the Teaching Career

I., Negative aspects

a) need to perform routine and clerical work – spend hours preparing
lesson plans, checking and computing grades, etc.
b) Lack of concrete and tangible results. One of the challenges of teaching is
encouraging students to perform at their maximum level but no matter how
hard the teacher tries, it is often difficult to see the results of his work in the
concrete. A teacher can seldom step back and appreciate the finished product.
c) Low Salaries. A teacher receives a very modest salary in comparison with
the other professionals in the community.
d) Comparatively low status among the professional groups. Is low salary
equated with low status? This should not be because the reality is that it is a
noble profession.
Activity question #8
5. How will you refute these negative aspects of teaching? Are they still true
today? You can discuss your disclaimer.

II. Positive aspects

a) Freedom in the performance of the job. It gives him the chance to enjoy
a certain amount of freedom to decide for himself how to resolve
instructional and behavioral problems in the classroom.
b) Recognition from peers, parents and the community.
c) Establishment of warm and happy relationships with students. The
chance to make a difference in the lives of students provides a major
reward to the teacher.
d) Increasing concern by the government.
e) An opportunity for social service. As a public servant, the teacher is
entrusted with the task of helping the young members of society
develop knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in coping with changes.
The high quality of social service demanded of teaching calls for men
and women of high ideals, sincere and noble purposes and engaging
personalities.
f) An opportunity for self-actualization. In the hierarchy of motives, self-
actualization is the highest that man could aspire for. Sometimes called
self-fulfillment, it refers to the desire to make the best of oneself not in
respect to what others are, but in respect to what he himself wants to
be. The teacher gets the chance to make his life interesting, meaningful
and worthwhile.
