Self-Learning Module for Grade 11

SCIENCE
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

Directions for the User

Here are some reminders to guide as you go through this module:
1. Read and follow each directions carefully;
2. Answer the pre-test before proceeding to the activity;
3. Take down notes and record points for clarification;
4. Always aim to get at least 80% of the total number of items given;
5. Be sure to answer the post test at the end of the module.

Introduction
The main role of DNA in the cell is the long-term storage of information. DNA is
responsible for inheritance, coding for proteins and the genetic instruction guide for life structure
and functions.  DNA holds the instructions for an organism's or each cell's development and
reproduction and ultimately death.

Pre-test
Directions: Read each statement and choose the letter of the correct answer. Shade the
circle that corresponds to the correct answer.

1. DNA must duplicate to ensure the consistency of the chromosome

C. Explain
Activity 2
Using the diagram below arrange the sequences involved in the synthesis of the
DNA. Write The letters a-f before each number.

________1. The enzyme DNA polymerase links them to form the new DNA strand.
________2. The twisted strand relax and unzips.
________3. After the synthesis, the DNA contains 2 sets of molecules both with parent strand
and new strand.
________4. The enzyme DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bond of the DNA.
________5. RNA primer usually a few nucleotides long needs to be attached to the free
template.
________6. The separated strand becomes the parent of the new strand to be synthesized.

E. Evaluation
Identify the following.
_____________1. It relax and began to unzip.
_____________2. Enzymes that break the hydrogen bonds between base pair.
_____________3. Needs to be attached in the separated strand of the DNA
_____________4. Enzymes that attach the free nucleotide to form new double stranded
DNA
_____________5. Number of strands produce after DNA replication
