Nation
A large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a
particular country or territory.

Elements of a Nation:

The Concept of State

A STATE is a community of persons, more or less numerous, occupying a definite territory.


Possessing an organized government, and enjoying independence from external control. It is a people
permanently occupying a fixed territory and bound by a common-law habits and customs into one body
politic, exercising through the medium of an organized government, independent sovereignty and control
over all persons and things within its boundaries, capable of making war and peace and entering into
international relations with other communities of the globe.

Elements of a State
➢ People
• The entire body of those citizens of a state who are invested with political power for
Political purposes.
• It is necessary to the existence of the state.
• The number should be neither too small nor too large.
• A casual gathering of individuals by chance, a group of bandits or a society of pirates do not
form people as an element of state.
➢ Territory
• It is a geographical area under the jurisdiction of another country or sovereign power or state.
• It must be a fixed territory which the inhabitants occupy.
• A state must have a territory sufficient in extent to provide for its maintenance and growth.
➢ Government
• It is the totality of authorities which rule a society by prescribing and carrying out fundamental
rules which regulate the freedom of its members.
• It is a whole class of officeholder upon whom devolve the executive, judicial, and
administrative functions of the state.
➢ Sovereignty
It means supreme and final authority above and beyond which no legal power exists.
✓ Internal sovereignty means that the state is supreme over all its citizens and associations.
✓ External sovereignty means that the state is independent and free from foreign of outside
control

Globalization as official definition from WHO.
” The increased interconnectedness and interdependence of peoples and countries. It is generally understood to
include two inter-related elements: the opening of international borders to increasingly fast flows of goods, services,
finance, people and ideas; and the changes in institutions and policies at national and international levels that facilitate or
promote such flows.”
Examples of globalization
➢ Economic globalization- is the development of trade systems within transnational actors such as corporations
or NGOs;
➢ Financial globalization- linkage with the rise of a global financial system with international financial
exchanges and monetary exchanges
➢ Cultural globalization- refers to the interpenetration of cultures which, as a consequence, means nations adopt
principles, beliefs, and costumes of other nations, losing their unique culture to a unique, globalized supra-
culture;
➢ Political globalization- the development and growing influence of international organizations such as
the UN or WHO
➢ Sociological globalization- interconnection and interdependence of events and mixing and integrating
different societies;
➢ Technological globalization- the phenomenon by which millions of people are interconnected thanks to
the power of the digital world via platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Skype or Youtube.
➢ Geographic globalization- with transportation and flying made so easy and affordable, it is possible to travel
the world without barely any restrictions;
➢ Ecological globalization- considering planet Earth as a single global entity – a common good all
societies should protect since the weather affects everyone and we are all protected by the same
atmosphere.
Some Advantages of Globalization
➢ It provides cheaper goods for consumers
➢ It leads to better economics
➢ It promotes world peace and unity
➢ It promotes innovations
➢ It opens up global market
➢ It creates cross-cultural management
➢ It reduces the gap between rich and poor
Some Disadvantages of Globalization
➢ It causes fluctuation of prices
➢ It creates job insecurity
➢ It causes environmental damage
➢ It increases lifestyle diseases
➢ It triggers abandonment of culture
➢ It provides opportunity for terrorism
➢ It causes displacement of workers
