Global Methane Initiative (GMI)
Since 2004
▪ GMI is an international public-private partnership • 45 Partner Countries
focused on reducing barriers to the recovery and use of • 700+ Project Network members
methane as a clean energy source • Alliances with international organizations
focused on methane recovery and use
▪ GMI advances methane mitigation in three key sectors:
– Oil and Gas,
– Biogas (Municipal Solid Waste, Agriculture and Wastewater), &
– Coal Mines.

It’s an Exciting Time for GMI!

▪ GMI re-chartered through May 2031

– Raise ambition and elevate international awareness of the critical
need to reduce methane emissions now
– Promote technical expertise and lessons learned
– Harmonize efforts with The Paris Agreement, CCAC, EU Methane
Strategy, and potential United Nations Declaration
– Formalize new partnerships with key organizations

Recent Highlights

On 3 June 2021, GMI reached hundreds of global stakeholders

through A Call to Action on Methane, a live event featuring keynote
addresses and an industry panel discussion.
▪ Raised international awareness of the critical need to reduce methane A recording of the live event is available
emissions on GMI’s Call to Action website
▪ Emphasized opportunities for international leaders in industry, private
sector, and government to take action More than 800 individuals
▪ Celebrated GMI’s re-chartering from 70 countries registered
to attend
In 2021, we welcomed three new Indonesian delegates to the GMI
Oil & Gas Subcommittee from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy
and Mineral Resources, Directorate General for Oil and Gas
▪ Mr. Putu Suardana, Coordinator, Engineering and Environmental Safety
▪ Mr. Agustin Hermawan, Sub-Coordinator, Environmental Safety

GMI Collaboration in Indonesia
▪ 2010: Indonesia joined GMI
▪ 2012-2014: GMI provided technical support for desktop analyses and emissions
detection and measurement studies conducted at the following oil and gas facilities
– 2012: Star Energy - Kakap Oilfield and field Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) facility
– 2013: VICO - East Kalimantan
– 2014: Pertamina - Tambun and Subang oil and gas production facilities
▪ 2014: GMI collaborated with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources
(MEMR) to promote technology transfer by conducting the 3rd Asia Pacific GMI Oil &
Gas Sector Workshop in Bandung, Indonesia
▪ 2021: GMI is collaborating with MEMR on the methane emission reductions strategy
for Indonesia’s oil and gas sector, to build capacity on emissions measurement,
quantification and/or reporting
▪ We hope to foster greater collaboration between government and industry, especially on methane
emissions data and mitigation opportunities 9
