ACTIVITY SHEET #3: Writing Techniques

GEAR UP
MELC: Use a variety of informative, persuasive, and argumentative writing techniques

After the learners have finished answering this activity sheet, they will be able to:
1. differentiate informative, persuasive, and argumentative text;
2. classify writing techniques as informative, persuasive, and argumentative; and 3. construct
an essay demonstrating any of the three writing techniques.

ENGAGE

WRITING TECHNIQUES
A writing technique is a style an author uses to convey their message in a manner that is effective and
meaningful to their audience. Understanding the different types of writing techniques is important because
you will need to change your style of writing to make a connection with your audience.

Informative Writing
The informative writing definition is precisely what its name implies – writing that is designed to inform the
reader about a given topic. Informative writing, which is sometimes called expository or explanatory writing,
uses evidence and information from credible sources to support a focused and logical explanation of the topic
at hand. The following techniques were used:
1. It uses unbiased information about a given topic that is presented in a way that helps the reader
truly understand the subject. It sticks with facts and enables readers to draw their own conclusions 2.
It uses language that is easy to comprehend. If technical terms are included, clear definitions and
explanations of those terms are also included.
3. It is specific - explains what happened, where and when it happened, as well as why it is important.
4. It uses a variety of sentence structures to keep the reader from getting bored.
5. Ideas are organized in a way that makes sense. Each body paragraph focus on explaining a single idea
that was introduced in the thesis statement and that develops the topic in a logical manner.
6. The concluding paragraph summarizes the main points made throughout the essay and should also
restate the thesis statement in a new way.

Persuasive Writing
Persuasive writing is a form of writing that encourages careful word choice, the development of logical
arguments, and a cohesive summary. It is used to convince or persuade a reader that the writer’s opinion of a
topic or cause is correct by appealing to readers' emotions to make them believe something or take specific
action. The following techniques are used:
1. Combines facts with emotions to convince the reader that the author is “right”
2. Emotion-based
3. Ignores counter claims
4. Presents only ideas that help establish a position
5. Only presents only one side – the author’s side
6. Make claims without evidence
7. Uses tone that is emotionally charged and more aggressive ‘

DIVISION OF GEN. TRIAS CITY

(Intensified Support to Learning Alternatives Through Activity Sheets)

8. Uses persuasive words - “for this reason, because, I believe, as evidence shows” etc. Have a list of
these words and phrases displayed so that students can easily use them when writing persuasive essays.
Argumentative Writing
In argumentative writing, you are typically asked to take a position on an issue or topic and explain and
support your position with research from reliable and credible sources. It uses logic and evidence to build a
case for a specific claim. The following techniques are used:
1. Offers facts, reasons, and evidence to show the author has valid points
2. Logic-based
3. May compare ideas to establish a position
4. Presents multiple sides but is clear which is the author’s side
5. Always provides evidence with claims
6. The tone is calmer – trying to convince that the author’s side is worth considering

Text 1: COMBATING THE CULT OF THINNESS

Why would a frightening percentage of women gladly trade five years off their lives for 10 pounds
off their bodies, or prefer to be perceived as thin rather than as kind or intelligent? This obsession
with thinness needs to be understood if we are to avoid the consequences, which are often tragic.
Beyond this, there are further steps that ought to be taken so that women can have a healthier and
more positive sense of themselves.
It is no wonder that women are obsessed with thinness. From a very young age, it is emphasized
to women how important it is to be pretty, and to be pretty by society’s standards means being thin.
This blatant message is seen everywhere. Not only do images in magazines, TV commercials and
billboard posters put an exaggerated emphasis on women's bodies, they also hold up an ideal of
thinness that is almost impossible to attain. Computer-enhanced photography employs techniques
such as airbrushing blemishes and slenderizing the bodies of models. This adds to the creation of an
ideal model that women strive to mimic.
Society’s prescription of what it means to be feminine needs a rewrite. Current definitions of
femininity are dictated by a social system that gains control over women by defining them primarily in
terms of their bodies. In order to see change, women must challenge the industries that feed upon
body insecurity. They need to change the messages that women absorb daily. One method would be
to stop purchasing the very fashion magazines that have been allowed to define femininity. Large-
scale boycotts of these fashion magazines can lead to major change of the feminine ideal.

Text 2: THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION IN THE PHILIPPINES

In the Philippines, English prevails as the predominant medium of instruction. All subjects except
Filipino is taught in English. Philippines is one of the few countries that does not use its own national
language as its medium of instruction. Filipino should be the medium of instruction in Philippine
schools because it is the national language, and it is already developed. Although it is sad that the
students have not mastered it.
Filipino should be the medium of instruction in Philippine schools because it is the national
language. Filipino is what the students are familiar with and what they use for communicating. The
students are also not using their full potential because they cannot use their own mother tongue in
participating in class. They are having a hard time because they need to speak in English which they
are not too familiar with. As Wolfaardt (2001) said, “the learners are not always able to understand
instructions and as a result they are not able to perform as they would have done in their mother
tongue”. Students who learn with their mother tongue would easily comprehend the lesson and
perform better. In Kalinga, a test was conducted among grade 1 to 3 learners who were taught in
their mother tongue in subjects of English and Filipino. They were able to attain a grade of 76% for
both subjects (Monsod, 2009). The students were able to pass and gain a score above the average.
It proves that using a student’s mother tongue is more effective in developing a student’s learning.
No one can deny the need for learning English, but it should only be learned and not be used as
the medium of instruction. Although English is a universal language, using Filipino as the medium of
instruction is vital in students learning. Filipino is still the national language and as studies show,
learning in the mother tongue is more effective for both Filipino and English. By learning in their first
language, the students will be able to build a strong foundation and will master not only their mother
tongue but also additional languages such as English. Students who learn in their mother tongue are
able to learn more effectively.

Text 3: PHILIPPINES STUDENTS FACE DISTANCE LEARNING UNTIL COVID-19 VACCINE FOUND
MANILA (Reuters) - With schools in the Philippines only due to reopen when a vaccine for COVID-19
has been found, educational authorities are racing to devise a distance learning regime for 27 million
children by August, when the summer holidays end.

That poses a huge challenge in an archipelago nation of 107 million, where many households have
no access to the internet or a computer, and teachers fear they will not be ready to roll out remote
learning in two months.
Duterte last month said resuming face-to-face classes without a vaccine for COVID-19 “spells
disaster”.
Elsewhere in the world, schools are starting to reopen for students with social distancing regimes to
keep infection rates down, and amid fears about children missing out on weeks of their education.
However, Duterte’s education secretary, Leonor Briones, is confident alternative approaches can work
until a vaccine is developed.
“The president cares about our students, he told us to find other ways (to teach) besides students going
back to school,” Briones said in an online media briefing.
She said the department was laying the groundwork for a different kind of learning using technology
including radio, television, online classes and modular learning.
More than 1,000 people in the Philippines have died due to COVID-19 and nearly 23,000 have been
infected. Briones, 79, has herself recovered from COVID-19.
There are more than 100 potential vaccines being developed globally, but most estimate it would be
at least a year before any are ready for deployment.
