B. 1. Define Dilatation and Curettage

Dilatation refers to the enlargement or widening of the
cervical canal from an opening a few millimeters wide to one
large enough (approximately 10 cm) to permit passage of a
fetus.
Curettage is used to insert into the uterus to remove tissue.
2. Research the following instruments, attached the picture,
indicate the usage of each instrument.
a. Gloved hand - to conduct a vaginal examination and
check the size and location of the uterus by pressing on
your lower abdomen.

b. Metal or plastic vaginal speculum - is used to gently

expand the vagina and allow access to the cervix.
c. Forcep - is used to grasp the front lip of the cervix -
causing the uterus to open a little.

d. Blunt-tipped probe - the surgeon carfeully measures the

lenght of the uterus and takes a small sample of tissue
from the cervical canal.

e. Dilators - the surgeon will dilate, or open the cervix,

using a series of progressivey larger metal rods.

f. Curette - to gently scrape out the lining of the uterus and

to remove tissue inside the uterus.

When the entire lining of the uterus has been removed, the
instruments are withdrawn.

The tissue removed will then be sent to a laboratory for

analysis.
