Exhaust Brake Relay Supply Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The electronic control module (ECM) enables the exhaust brake by
sending a signal to the relay that controls the exhaust brake under
certain conditions.
COMPONENT LOCATION
Refer to the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) diagram for
the location of the engine brake.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the OEM 23-pin connector. Inspect the engine harness and the ECM connectors for:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair or replace the engine harness or ECM,

whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 3A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the OEM 23-pin connector. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from pin 42 of
the ECM connector to pin O of the 23-pin OEM harness connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the OEM 23-pin connector. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance from
pin 42 in the engine harness to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 1D No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 1D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the OEM 23-pin connector. Check for a short circuit between pins. Measure the resistance
from pin 42 to all other pins in the ECM connector.

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the engine harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the OEM harness from the exhaust brake. Inspect the OEM harness, 23-pin
connector, and the exhaust brake connector for:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or exhaust

brake connectors, whichever have damaged pins
Go to 3A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the engine harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the OEM harness from the exhaust brake. Check for an open circuit. Measure the
resistance from pin O of the 23-pin OEM connector on the OEM side to pin 1 of the exhaust brake
connector.
Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the engine harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the OEM harness from the exhaust brake. Check for a short circuit to ground.
Measure the resistance from pin O of the 23-pin connector to the engine block ground.
