Part 1: Discussion

1. Introduce

2. Question: What are the qualities or characteristics that every leader should have?
My: Courage. Rather than avoiding problems or allowing conflicts to fester, courage enables
leaders to step up and move things in the right direction.
Phuong: Empathy. The more you understand what people are thinking and feeling, the more you
will be able to influence their thoughts and actions and through that achieve the organization’s
goals.
Linh: Self-awareness. Leadership is a choice, not a position. But ambition is not everything, you
have to meet all the needs demanded before thinking of leading someone else.

Part 2: Situation
“You are staying in a hotel and due to meet important clients the next day to discuss a
very large order. You receive a call at 5 am on the day of the meeting, to say that one of your
drivers has had an accident while on his way to make a delivery and is in hospital with very
serious injuries. Your hotel is eight hours’ travelling time from the hospital. However, one of
your junior managers lives just two kilometres from the hospital.”
Phuong: First, I'll phone the junior manager to inquire about the employee's status and the order's
condition. We must ensure that the order satisfies all of the standards since clients will not accept
a fault under any circumstances.
If the order is damaged and cannot be sent, notify the firm immediately and contact the
warehouse to check if a similar product is available. If yes, the request is submitted right away. If
we are unable to prepare the order in time, we must inform the client, try to bargain, and face the
costs.
If the order is still good, it should be sent as soon as possible. I need to determine the precise
delivery time. It can be handled if it is on time or only 5-15 minutes late. If the time is likely to
be later, it is vital to inform the client of the delay so that the two sides may agree on a more
convenient meeting time.

Linh: From my point of view, I think this is a pretty tricky situation that we have to deal with,
but thanks to the development of technology nowadays, we can take advantage of it, like: the
junior manager will come to the hospital to take the deliveries. Then he/she can fax all of the
papers which are needed for the contract to the hotel just in case the papers can’t be received in
time. Right after that, the junior manager will bring the paper to the hotel. Despite the fact that it
takes 8 hours to travel from the destination to the hotel, I can discuss with my clients about the
terms in the contract through the fax and make an arrangement the next day with the rest in order
to close the deal.

My: To me, in any case, health must come first. I also believe the driver gets himself insurance
in the contract. Since there’s a junior manager living just two kilometres from the hospital, I will
probably ask him to come to make sure that the surgery is successful and by the way, take the
delivery with him. As for the appointment with the important clients, I will find another way to
be on time. If not, I will give them the explanation for the situation and try to delay the meeting
after carefully checking on the order.
