Learning Resources

A. Textbook: Exploring Life Through Science 9, pp. 244-248

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students shall have:

1. determined the percentage composition of a compound given its chemical formula
and vice versa;
2. related the importance of molecular and empirical formula in identifying and naming
compounds; and
3. solved the molecular formula and empirical formula of some common household
products.
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC)
● Determine the percentage composition of a compound given its chemical formula and
vice versa.

A. Getting Started

Here we are once again for another week of learning! In our previous lesson we
talked about the mole concept to express the mass of substances. For this week's
topic we will talk about how to determine percent composition of a compound given
its chemical formula and vice versa.

B. Exploring the Lesson

Now, to deepen your understanding about Mole and Molar Mass of Elements and
Compounds, watch the supplementary video presentation on your Workspace/ OTG flash
drive entitled “Percentage Composition of a Compound” or you may also use your book on
page 244-248, for more explanation about our topic for this week. Jot down notes and have
fun learning!

After listening to the presentation answer the self check question on page 248:

How will you know the empirical formula of a compound through its percent composition?
To determine the empirical formula, percent composition is needed because it is converted
into g where afterwards it will divide to it’s atomic mass.

B. Assessing Learning
To gauge what you have learned, do the given activities.

Activity 1: Percent composition. Find the percent composition of the given compounds.
Take a picture of your solutions and save/upload it on your Workspace/ OTG flash drive.

Example:
1. Cu2S
Cu: 63.55 x 2 = 127.10 = 127.10 / 159.17 x 100 = 79.85%
S: 32.07 x 1 = 32.07 = 32.07 / 159.17 x 100 = 20.15%
2. LiOH
3. Al2(CO3)3
4. P2O5
5. NaCN
6. HNO3
7. Ca3(BO3)2
8. Ca3(BO3)2
9. Sb(SCN)5
10. (NH4)2SO4
Activity 2: Empirical and Molecular Formulas. Find the chemical formulas of the given
compounds. Take a picture of your solutions and save/upload it on your Workspace/ OTG
flash drive.
1. Find the empirical formula of a compound consisting of 63% Mn and 37% O.
2. Caffeine, a stimulant present in coffee and other beverages, contains 49% carbon,
28.9% nitrogen, 16.5% oxygen, and 5.15% hydrogen. Find its empirical formula. If its
molar mass is 195 g, what is its molecular formula?
3. The molar mass of cholesterol is 286 g. The compound contains 83.9% carbon, 12.0
% hydrogen and 41% oxygen. What are its empirical and molecular formulas?
Answer the prompt, what takeaways from the lesson will be Important to know? Why?
The important takeaways from the lesson that it is important to know is the steps in getting
the percentage composition, empirical formula and molecular formula because each of it is
important to remember because it is connected.
C. Enhancing Skills

After learning about chemical formulas of compounds, ions, and molecules, you can now
firm up your understanding of these concepts by applying the knowledge you have learned.

List at least 5 household chemicals you use every day and indicate their chemical formula.

Household Chemical Formula

Example: Sucrose (table sugar) C12H22O11
Vinegar CH₃COOH
Salt NaCl
Baking Soda NaHCO3
Bleach NaClO
Soap C17H35COONa

D. Reflection

Kindly write your personal response in the prompt below.

In this lesson, you learned about the percent composition of a compound. In what way can
you relate the importance of molecular and empirical formulas in identifying and naming
compounds? It is important because there are lots of chemical formula that is needed in
order to create a compound and knowing the percent composition will be a great knowledge
in order to identify it.
