Deflection Angle Method and Incremental Chords (Transit and


Tape or Theodolite and Tape)

Deflection Angle – is the angle measured at the PC from the back tangent to the desired
point on the curve.

Chord – is a straight line between two points on the curve.

Geometric Principles
1. The angle between a tangent and a chord, measured at the point of tangency, is
equal to one-half of the central angle or angle subtended by the chord.

2. The angle between two chords that intersect on the circumference of a circle is equal
to one-half of the central angle or angle of arc subtended between them.

deflection angle method.
