Data Recorders: Consider that many general aviation aircraft now have glass cockpits with no

impact resistant data recorders. Should personal use aircraft be required to have some form of

flight data recorders?

By federal law [USG11], transport category aircraft are required to have a digital flight

recorder. Most military aircraft have flight recorders of some sort to determine much of the same

information as a civilian transport aircraft. However for the general aviation sector, it is a not

mandatory. However, there are less expensive systems, such as GoPro, Inflight Cam, and

Garmin Virb, that could be placed in the cockpit and be able to monitor communications inside

m

the cockpit, as well as provide GPS and video data. As long as the digital media storage is intact,

co

and the camera is properly installed to view the cockpit and pilot’s actions, then investigators

could gather some more information of the events leading up to the accident[Cox11].

I am neutral on the issue, but if someone lit a fire to my feet, I would decide that if would

be a good tool to have to determine probable cause. The digital flight recorder, I’m just going to

say GoPro as a generalized term, would be able to record much of what I stated above, and also

maybe help identify issues in either training or mechanics of the aircraft. Again, the GoPro isn’t
ed d

really crash survivable, but again, if the digital storage was intact, then the investigator could pull

more information to develop a sound hypothesis to the cause of the crash.

Crash Lab Observations: What does CREEP stand for and did you detect any obvious signatures
Th

revealing issues with survivability?

sh

CRREP is a method of investigation that reviews the potential of post crash survivability

of the crew and passengers based on aircraft design [Woo07]. The acronym stands for container,

restraint, energy absorption, environment, and post crash factors.

The main observations on the interior of the crash is that I found severed seat bolts as

stress caused the seats to separate from the floor. Another factors that was observed is that that

the food cart, interior speakers, and carry-on lugage was strewn about the aircraft cabin, which

would have been potential projecties within the cabin area. Addiitionally, the luggage

compartment on the right side of the plane had severed from the cabin roof, which may indicated

carry-on luggage may have been over the weight restrictions. The floor of the cabin had been

pushed up by cargo from the cargo area, which caused one of the seats to be pushed up and

forward, injuring the occupant of that seat.
