SCHOOL BASED DRRM PLAN

Disasters are not NATURAL. They only occur when people lack
preparedness or the ability to cope with HAZARDS.

While we in the Department of Education are greatly affected

when disaster strikes, we can also be part of the SOLUTION.

We can be part of the solution by integrating Disaster Risk

Reduction and Management in our school curriculum and
programs to ensure that our learners know the causes,
consequences and actions to be taken in times of disaster.

So how can we integrate DRRM in education to make our school

disaster proof?

We can start by making our School Disaster Management Plan.

Functions School Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Group (SDRRMG):

- SDRRMG is responsible for creating and enforcing the

School Disaster Management Plan (SDMP)

- Constantly Monitor, Evaluate and Assess the safety

and security issues at the School and the hazards, risks
and vulnerabilities affecting student and teachers.
What would be the Composition of the SDRRMG?
KNOW YOUR DANGERS

- Assess your risks, hazards, vulnerabilities and capacities

(Hazard Mapping);
- Plan for risk reduction, response and educational
continuity;

- Learn and spread key messages for disaster risk

reduction;
- Learn standard operating procedures and practice with
school drills.

- Involve and communicate with your Community.

A CONTINGENCY PLAN is a document setting out an
organized planned and coordinated course of action to
be followed in case of a disaster: identifying who does
what and when.

Important points to be followed while preparing a

contingency plan.
✓ The plan should be created in such a way that everyone can FOLLOW it.
✓ The plan should be made by CONSULTING everyone and every child should be
involved in preparing the plan,
✓ Taking into CONSIDERATION the current situation and previous disasters, the
plan should mitigate the impacts of and or prevent, future disasters.
✓ The plan should be REVISED according to changes which occur.
Fives (5) stages
l) Discuss what happened in the school/village during
the last disaster
2) Make a description of the village/school
3) List what causes damage in the disaster and where
4) Assess who is at risk and what is at risk
5) Decide how to reduce risk?
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND MAPPING

Has two parts:

A. BASE MAP, which is drawn on illustration board

or cartolina

B. HAZARD OVERLAYS, which are drawn on clear

plastic sheets
How to make the map?
1. Sketch school and community in bond paper then transfer to an illustration board
2. Use symbols to represent buildings, river, houses, etc

BASE MAP HAZARD OVERLAYS

How to make the map?

1. Sketch school and

community in bond
paper then transfer to
an illustration board

2. U s e s y m b o l s t o
represent buildings,
river, houses, etc
1. Early Warning Plan: provides for an effective way of alerting School
Community to an impending hazard- includes a universal signal
2. Communication Plan: Identifies the flow of information
3. Evacuation Plan
- Lists the total population and indicates how many people can be accommodated
- Identifies safe holding areas for pupils and teachers.
4. Evacuation Map: Shows the routes to take from the classroom to the safe
holding area.
