1.2. Grammar
1.2.1. Passive voice in Present Simple (Revision)
a. Uses: The passive voice of a verb tells us that someone (or something) has an action
done to them.
b. Form
Example:
Active: Iron displaces copper to form iron sulphate.
Passive: Copper is displaced by iron to form iron sulphate.
1.2.2. Passive voice with “Can”
Example:
Active: A chemical equation can describe a chemical reaction.
Passive: A chemical reaction can be described by a chemical equation.
1.2.3. Useful Structures to describe chemical reactions
Structures Examples
React with Acid-base reaction occurs when an acid reacts
(Phản ứng với) with a base to give salt and water.
A combine with B to verb Hydrogen combines with oxygen to form
(Kết hợp cái gì với cái gì để….) water.
A and B combine to verb Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water.
(A kết hợp với B để …)
Cause something (to verb) Temperature causes water molecules to move
(Gây nên cái gì/ làm cho cái gì thế nào) more quickly.
Produce something - Iron reacts with water and oxygen to
be produced from produce rust.
(Tạo ra cái gì/ được tạo ra từ) - Rust is produced from the combination of
iron and water with oxygen.
Break down into In decomposition reaction, a single compound
be broken down into breaks down into two or more simpler
(Phá vỡ thành) substances.
Displace In a single displacement reaction, one element
Replace something displaces/ replaces another element in a
(Thay thế cái gì) compound.
1.2.4. How to read the chemical equation: You can choose either of the following
ways:
v Using the name for the substance/ compound.
v Using the letters represented for each substance

LESSON 1
Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify different types
of chemical reactions.
BINGO!!
Ø Work individually
John Hello Anna! You’re learning about synthesis reactions?
Anna Yes. Unfortunately, I do not know much about synthesis reactions.
John Don’t worry Anna! I’ll help you!
Anna That would be wonderful, John! So, what is a synthesis reaction?
John Well, a synthesis reaction (1) _____ when two or more substances combine to form
a new compound.
Anna Only one compound? Is the (2) _____ of this type of reaction A + B à AB?
John That’s right!
Anna Can you give me an example, please?
John Of course! Iron (3) _____ sulfur to produce iron sulfide. In this reaction, it has two reactants
reactants and only one product.
Anna Well, another problem. I’m not clear about decomposition reaction. Can you tell
me its (4) _____ ?
John Well, in a decomposition reaction, one compound (5) _____ into two or
more simple substances.
Anna OK. I got it! What would the general form be?
John All decomposition reactions are in the form of AB à A + B. Could you give me
an example, Anna?
Anna Would this be an example: water is broken down in to hydrogen and oxygen?
The (6) _____ is 2H2O à 2H2 + O2
John Good job Anna! You know, it’s the opposite of a synthesis reaction.
Anna Ah, I can see it now! Thank you!
4 FREE TALK
Ø Work individually
Ø Prepare a short talk about the definition of chemical reactions
and types of chemical reactions
Ø Give your talk in front of the whole class
Suggested questions:
• What is a chemical reaction?
• What is a chemical equation? What does it include?
• How many types of chemical reactions are there? What are they?
• Give an example of one type: definition, reactants and products.
Sample:
A chemical reaction is the process in which atoms present in the starting substances
rearrange to give new chemical combinations present in the substances formed by
the reaction…..
4. Students’ self-assessment
Look at the objectives specified at the beginning of the unit and write down what you
have (not) achieved and what you need to do to improve your English.
LESSON 2
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
• Create a conversation about a chemical reaction
• Give a brief description of a chemical reaction
SUBSTANCES
Ø Work individually
Ø Look at the formula and speak out the name of each substance
Sample: Na -> Sodium
1 EQUATION
Ø Work in 2 groups
Ø In turn, 2 students go to the board – listen to another student in the
class (from any group) reading aloud the chemical equation
Ø The student writing the correct equation in shorter time gets 1 point
Sample:
è Listen to a friend: “Hydrogen and chlorine combine to make hydrochloric acid.”
è Write on the board:
2
A CHEMICAL REACTION
Ø Work in pairs
Ø Complete the conversation
A Do you know what type of chemical reaction it is?
B In this reaction, a potassium ion (5) _____ one of the hydrogen atoms in each molecule
of water. Potassium is a highly reactive group 1 alkali metal, so its reaction
B A colorless solid compound named potassium hydroxide (KOH) and hydrogen gas
(H2)
A Do you know any examples of this type of chemical reactions in real life?
B Well, there are some examples such as producing copper from copper sulfate,
3 CONVERSATION
Ø Work in pairs
Ø Choose one of the following equations and make a conversation about
that chemical reaction
Ø Suggestions:
• Types of chemical • What happpens?
reaction? • Products?
• Definition? • Examples in real life?
• Reactants?
4
FREE TALK
Ø Work individually
Ø Prepare a brief description of a chemical reaction that you’ve
known
Ø Give your talk with one partner and make presentation in front of
the whole class
Suggested quesions:
• What type of reaction is this?
• What is the definition?
• What are the reactants and products?
• What exactly happens in this reaction?
• What are the examples of this type of reactions in real life?
8 Fe + S8→ 8 FeS
Sample:
This is an example of synthesis reaction. This reaction occurs when two or more substances
react to produce...
