5.0.0 CATHODIC PROTECTION PRE-DESIGN SURVEYS:
The Cathodic Protection Pre-Design Surveys includes measurement of electrical resistivity of the
soil where the terminal is to be constructed. The Buried Plant Piping & Earthing Network are laid
a depth of ~2.5m and soil resistivity survey is carried out up to depth of 5m. The step by step
survey procedure are explained in details.

5.1.0 SOIL RESISTIVITY SURVEY PROCEDURES:

This indication of a tendency for current to flow becomes more important if something is known
about the soil resistivity. High-resistivity soils may offer so much resistance Measurement
Procedures and Survey Methods to current flow that conditions are not as severe as the plotted
potential data might lead one to believe. Conversely, severe potential peaks coupled with a
relatively low resistivity environment may mean a truly serious condition. In addition to being a
valuable aid when interpreting the severity of corrosive are as, a soil resistivity profile is
extremely helpful in the later selection of sites for CP installations.

5.2.0 SOIL RESISTIVITY TEST INSTRUMENT:

Soil resistivity field measurements are often made using ASTM 1 G57 or IEEE 2 Standard 81,
more commonly known within the corrosion industry as the “Wenner 4-Pin Method”. This
procedure involves driving four steel pins into the earth in a straight line, equally spaced, with the
pin spacing equal to the depth to which knowledge of the average soil resistivity is desired. Soil
resistivity is a simple function of the voltage drop between the center pair of pins, with current
flowing between the two outside pins.

The Meters provides the necessary current supplied to the outer pins, while simultaneously
measuring the voltage drop between the center pair of pins. The resistance, in ohms, is then the
reading on the dial multiplied by the range switch position. The instrument can measure
resistance values between 10 to 1000 Ohms depending on which multiplier (scale) is selected.
The meter also uses alternating current, which overcomes the problem of polarization of the pins,
an inherent problem with direct current tests.

5.3.0 SOIL RESISTIVITY SURVEY METHODOLOGY:

The Soil Resistivity shall be measured at depths 1,2,3,4,5 Meter depths proposed. Soil resistivity
measurements were conducted by the Wenner four-pin method, utilizing a soil resistance meter.
The Wenner method requires the use of four metal probes or electrodes, driven into the ground
along a straight line, equidistant from each other, as shown in Figure. An alternating current from
the soil resistance meter causes current to flow through the soil, between pins C1 and C2. The
voltage or potential is then measured between pins P1 and P2. The meter then records the
resistance Reading.

SOIL RESISTIVITY TEST SETUP

Resistivity of the soil is then computed from the instrument reading, according to the following
formula:

The resistivity values obtained represent the average resistivity of the soil to a depth equal to the
pin spacing. Resistance measurements are typically performed to a depth equal to that of the
pile foundation being evaluated.

Soil resistivity data shall be taken by the four-pin method should be recorded in tabular form
attached as Annexure – A for convenience in calculating resistivities and evaluating results
obtained. The indicated resistivity to a depth equal to any given pin spacing is a weighted
average of the soils from the surface to that depth. Trends can be illustrated best by inspecting
the sets of soil resistivity readings in Table.

Soil resistivity is an electrical characteristic of the soil / groundwater which affects the ability of
corrosion currents to flow through the electrolyte (soil/groundwater).

Make a record of measurements results, date and time.
