Hadith 402
On the authority of Hudhayfa bin Al-Yaman - may God be pleased with them - in the chain
of transmission: “Do not wear silk or brocade, do not drink from gold and silver utensils, and
do not eat from their plates; It is for them in this world and for you in the hereafter.”
Explanation of Hadith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ- forbade men from wearing silk and
brocade; Because their dress for males is fluid and feminine, and imitates soft, luxurious
women. And the man asks him roughness, strength and bully.
He ﷺalso forbade both men and women from eating and drinking from gold
and silver plates and utensils. And the wisdom, as he, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
said: Eating in them in this world is for the infidels who hasten their good deeds in their
worldly lives, and enjoy them, and they are for you - purely Muslims - on the Day of
Resurrection if you avoid them; Fearing Allah ﷻ- the Most High - and hoping for what
he has, it was forbidden to imitate them and in compliance with the command of Allah
ﷻ- the Most High - was forbidden. Just as he who wears silk among men in this world
has hastened his pleasure; Therefore, he will not wear it in the Hereafter, and whoever
hastens something before its time in a forbidden way will be punished by his deprivation, and
Allah ﷻis severe in punishment.
It is permissible for women to wear silk, because they need adornment for husbands,
and it is permitted for women, and forbidden for men, according to the consensus of
scholars.
The prohibition of eating and drinking in gold and silver plates and utensils, for males
and females; Because they are for the infidels in this world, and for the Muslims in
the Hereafter.

Al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib رضي هللا عنهreported: I have never seen anyone with shoulder-length
hair and wearing a red garment more beautiful than the Messenger of Allah
ﷺ. He had shoulder-length hair and broad shoulders and was neither short
nor tall.
Explanation of Hadith
In this Hadīth, Al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib رضي هللا عنهdescribes the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
in a way that indicates his beauty and handsomeness. He says that he never saw anyone
whose hair reaches his earlobes and wearing a red garment more good-looking than the
Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then, he mentions something else from his description:
that he was broad-shouldered and that he was neither too tall nor too short.
It is permissible to wear red, which is the one that has red flags and white flags, and it
It is permissible to lengthen the hair of the head, provided that it is taken care of.

Al-Barā ibn ‘Āzib رضي هللا عنهreported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺordered us
to do seven things and forbade us from doing seven things. He ordered us to visit the
sick, to follow the funeral procession, to invoke Allah's mercy upon someone who
sneezes, to help others fulfill their oaths, to help the oppressed, to accept the invitation
of others, and to spread the greeting of peace. He forbade us to wear gold rings; to
drink in silver utensils; to use Mayāthir (cushions of silk stuffed with cotton and placed

under the rider on the saddle) and the Qasiyy (linen clothes containing silk brought
from an Egyptian town); and to wear silk, brocade and Dībāj (another fine kind of silk).
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ- was sent to perfect good manners, and therefore he
urges every decent character and action, and forbids all evil, and from that what is in this
hadith of the things that he commanded, namely: visiting the sick in which the right of the
Muslim is upheld, and his comfort, And supplication for him, and following the funeral,
because of that of the reward for the follower and supplication for the one who is followed,
and peace be upon the people of the graves, and the sermon and consideration, and the
gloating of the sneezer if he praises Allahﷻ, so it is said to him: May Allah ﷻhave
mercy on you.
And justifying the oath that is divided if he calls you to something and you do not have to do
any harm, then you must honour his oath, lest you need him to expiate on his oath, and to
answer his call and force his mind, and help the oppressed from his oppressor because of
what it involves in repelling injustice, repelling the aggressor and stopping him from evil,
forbidding evil, and answering those who called you, because in This is almost between
hearts and the purification of souls, and in abstinence there is loneliness and disharmony.
If the invitation is for marriage, then the answer is obligatory, and if it is for someone else, it
is desirable, and the peace is spread, which is to announce it and show it to everyone, and it is

As for the things that he forbade in this hadith, they are stamping with gold rings for men,

Abdullāh ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may
Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had a gold ring made for himself, and whenever he
wore it, he used to keep the stone toward the palm of his hand. Accordingly, the people made
the same thing. Afterward, he sat on the pulpit and took it off, saying: "I used to wear this
ring and keep its stone toward the palm of my hand." He then threw it away and said: "By
Allah! I will never wear it." Thereupon, all the people threw away their rings. In another
narration: "He wore it in his right hand."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺcommanded that a gold ring be made for him, and if
he wore it, he would put its lobe on the inside of his right palm, so the Companions followed
him on that and did as he did, then after a while the Prophet, may God bless him and grant
him peace, sat on the pulpit for people to see, then He said: I used to wear this ring, and put
its lobe inside my palm, then he threw it and said: By God, I never wear it, and that was after
it was forbidden, so the Companions threw their rings, following the example of the
Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace -.

That sealing with a gold ring was permissible for men first, then it was abrogated.
The prohibition of sealing with a gold ring for men, and its evidence is that The
Messenger of Allah ﷺ- took off the golden ring and threw it and swore
that he would never wear it.
The superiority of the Companions, and the speed of their emulation of The
Messenger of Allah ﷺ- as they took off their rings when he took off his
ring - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him.

On the authority of Umar ibn Al-Khattāb ي هللا عنهQQ رضreported: The Messenger of Allah
ﷺ forbade wearing silk except for this much, and he raised his index and middle
fingers to us. A narration by Muslim reads: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺforbade
wearing silk except for the width of two, three, or four fingers.”
Explanation of Hadith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ- forbade males from wearing silk except for what is
excluded, and the exception in the agreed upon hadith is two fingers, and in the narration of
Muslim, or three or four, so the most is taken; There is nothing wrong with the amount of
four fingers of silk in the dress.
