Activity 3: STATE OF MATTER

JESSICA OLIQUINO

Compare and contrast the three phases of matter using the Venn diagram.

-Define volume -molecules loosely

-definite shape
-Not compressible packed
-Melting and
-molecules tightly packed freezing phase
-expand some heated
-expand slightly when changes -conforms to
heated container
-may not conform to -less orderly
container
-orderly -Matter
-Made of
atom -Flow
-Sublimation -Molecules move
and faster each other
-Variable shape
deposition -Vaporization and
phase change condensation
phase change

-molecules very far apart

-expand a lot when heated
-gas at room temperature
-easily compressed
-conforms to container and fills
the
container
QUESTIONS

1) How does temperature affect the movement of the particles in the different
phases of matter?
-Temperature affect the movement of the particles with increase the
temperature, the particles move faster as they gain kinetic energy resulting in
increased collision rates an increased and increasing rate diffusion. Increase
the temperature the particle gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster and more
strongly.

2) How will you describe the motion of the particles upon increasing the
temperature?upon decreasing temperature?
- The particle are held together too strongly to allow movement from place
but the particles do vibrate about their position in the structure. The average
kinetic energy of the particles decrease significant the gas became a liquid.

3) How does the relative spacing of particle effect their relative motion?
-In solid th particles are tightly packed together when we heat a solid its
particles becomes more energy and kinetic energy of the particles increase.

4) How does the arrangement of the particles in matter explain its properties?
-The particles in a liquid are loosely arranged which means they do
not have a fixed shape like solids, but they rather take the shape of the
container they are in. The speed at which the particles move around inside
the liquid depends on the energy of the particles. ... In gases, the particles
move at even greater speeds. The looser arrangement of particles is what
allows liquids to take on the shape of their container. The intermolecular
forces between particles in liquid determine properties like viscosity and
surface tension. Particles in a liquid are higher in energy than the solid state,
but lower in energy than the gas state.
