1.0 General

1.1 Scope

This specification covers the general requirements for design, manufacture, assembly,
inspection and testing at the Vendor's works of medium voltage induction motors upto
1100V grade to be used for M/s Indian Oil corporation ltd.(IOCL ) for BR-9 expansion
project, Barauni, India.

1.2 Data sheet

(1) The motor shall conform to specific requirements mentioned in the data sheet apart
from the requirements mentioned in this specification
(2) Vendor shall submit the duly filled in data sheet along with the offer.

1.3 Codes and Standards

The equipment shall comply with all currently applicable statutes, regulations and safety
codes in the locality where the equipment will be installed and shall comply to the latest
edition of Indian standard / International Standard including amendments and addenda but
not limited to the following.

2.0 General Technical Requirements

2.1 Electrical performance and characteristics

2.1.1 General

(1) Motors shall be capable of giving rated output without reduction in the expected life
span when operated continuously with the variation in supply conditions as indicated
in the data sheet.

(2) The speed torque curve and the GD2 values of the driven equipments shall be
furnished by the Vendor.

(3) Motor shall be suitable for continuous running, without exceeding temperature limits
when the motor terminal voltage drops to 75% of the motor rated voltage.

(4) The pull out torque at the rated voltage shall be not less than 175% of the rated load
torque with no negative tolerance. In case of motors driving equipment with pulsating
loads (e.g. reciprocating compressors) the minimum value of pull out torque at 75%
of the rated voltage shall be more than the peak value of the pulsating torque.

(5) The permissible noise level of motors on no load condition shall be as per
applicable standard (IEC/IS) as a minimum, however motor shall comply to the noise
level requirement mentioned elsewhere for combined noise level with the driven
equipment such as compressor- motor train, pump –motor train etc.

(6) The velocity of motor vibration shall not exceed the value specified in the IS-12075
when measured on the bearing housings of motors in the horizontal, vertical & axial
directions operated with no-load at rated voltage and rated frequency.

(7) Energy efficient motors of IE2 category shall be chosen.

(8) Power, Neutral JB, Fan cover connecting hardware like Screws, nuts & bolts shall be
of Stainless steel (SS304 grade).

(9) Motors shall be capable for 20% over speed without danger of mechanical failure.

(10) Re-acceleration for identified critical motors shall be provided to cover brief
interruption up to 5 seconds in normal power supply.

(11) Motor rating at 50 degree C ambient (i.e. after derating for higher ambient)
shall be 10% above the power requirement of the driven equipment at design
duty point. Also the motor shall not be overloaded at any point of time in the
entire operating range of the driven equipment.

2.1.2 Starting

(1) Unless otherwise stated in data sheet, motor shall be Direct-on-line starting. The
motors shall be suitable for stating under specified load conditions with 75% of the
rated voltage at the terminals. Motors shall be designed for re-acceleration under full
load after a momentary loss of voltage with the residual voltage being 100% out of
phase.

(2) Motors shall be capable of starting and accelerating the load to its rated speed with
stipulated time with the applicable method of starting and with given speed torque
requirements of the load.

(3) Motors shall be designed to allow the minimum number of consecutive starts

(4) Minimum locked rotor thermal withstand time at rated voltage shall be 10 seconds
under cold conditions and 8 seconds under hot conditions. The hot thermal withstand
time at 100% voltage shall be at least 2 seconds more than the starting time. The
starting time of the motor shall be less than the hot thermal withstand time (time t E in
case of increased safety motors) to facilitate application of conventional bimetal
relays or thermal release against locked rotor and overload conditions.

(5) Starting torque and Pull up/Accelerating torque of the motor shall be compatible with
the speed torque curve of the driven equipment under specified operating condition.
For heavy-duty drives such as blowers, fans, etc. high starting torque (min. 150%)
motors shall be provided.

(6) The starting current (as % rated current) at 100 % rated voltage shall not exceed

600%(Exclusive of +VE tolerance as per IS/IEC) of normal current.

2.1.2 Direction of rotation

All MV motors shall be Bi-directional. Clockwise rotation of the motor (when viewed from
DE) shall be achieved when supply (R, Y, B) is connected to motor terminals (A, B, C) and
Counter-clockwise rotation (when viewed from DE) of the motor shall be achieved by
swapping any two phases of supply cable. Ample space shall be provided at the terminal
box for cable termination & interchanging any two external leads for obtaining the reverse
phase sequence.

2.1.4 Windings

2.1.4.1 Insulation and bracing

(1) Unless otherwise specified in the data sheet, motors shall be provided with class ‘F’
type insulation. The permissible temperature rise as measured by resistance method
shall be limited to those specified in the applicable Indian standards for class ‘B’
insulation.

(2) The windings shall be tropicalized. The windings shall preferable be vacuum
impregnated. Alternately the windings shall be suitably varnished, baked and treated
with epoxy gel for operating satisfactorily in humid and corrosive atmospheres.

(3) Windings shall be adequately braced to prevent any relative movement during
operating and in this respect, particular care shall be taken for the stator windings of
direct-on-line starting squirrel cage motors. Insulation shall be provided between
coils of different phases, which lie together. Core laminations must be capable of
withstanding burnout for rewind at 4000C without damage or loosening.

(4) In case of motors driving equipment with pulsating loads, special attention shall be
paid to the joints of rotor bars and end rings to avoid premature failures due to
induced fatigue stresses.

2.1.4.2 Phase connection

(1) The windings shall be connected in delta. However, for motors rated 2.2KW and
below, star connection may be accepted.

(2) If star-delta starting is required, this will be specified in the data sheet and the motor
windings shall be fully insulated for delta connection.

2.1.5 Terminal box

2.1.5.1 Winding termination

(1) The ends of the windings shall be brought out into a terminal box. They shall be
terminated by means of terminals mounted on an insulating base made of non-
hydroscopic and non-flammable material.

(2) All motors shall be with six terminals and suitable links to connect them in star or in
delta except for motors rated up to and including 2.2kW, which may be accepted

with three terminals.

(3) Line terminals shall be thoroughly insulated from the frame with material resistant to
tracking.

(4) Anti-loosening, anti-vibration type of terminals shall be provided in case of increased


safety (Ex ’e’) and non-sparking (Ex ‘n’) type of motors.

2.1.5.2 Terminal box and cable entries

(1) Unless otherwise specified, the terminal box shall be located on the left hand side
when viewed from the non-driving end. It shall be rotatable in steps of 900 to allow
cable entry from any direction.

(2) The terminal box shall be sturdy construction and large enough to facilitate easy
connection of the cables as specified in data sheets/GA drawings Terminal box
cover shall be provided with handles to facilitate easy removal.

(3) Adequately sized earth terminal shall be provided in the motor terminal box.

2.1.6 Motor casing and type of enclosure

(1) Motors for use in safe areas shall be normal industrial type meeting the specified
ambient conditions & operating requirements. The minimum degree of motor
enclosures including terminal boxes and bearing housing shall be IP-55 as per IS:
4691.

(2) Electrical motors for use in hazardous area shall be certified by testing authorities
like CMRI/CIMFR/ CPRI/ ERTL or equivalent recognized independent test house
such as BASEEFA/ LCIE/ PTV/UL/ FM/ ATEX/ CENELEC/ PTB, UL / FM. All
equipment’s (indigenous and imported) shall also have valid statutory approval i.e.
(CCOE/PESO) /DGMS/CCE as applicable for use in the specified hazardous area.

(3) The motors for hazardous areas shall be selected as per IS 5571. The guide
providing minimum requirement is summarized below:

Note:

a) All electric motors for agitators/mixers, LPG Pumps and metering pumps handling
flammable materiel shall be flameproof type (Ex d) irrespective of the area being
classified as zone 2 or zone1.

b) For Ex e motors, if the sum of risk factor is greater than 6 as per section 5.2.4.3 &
Table 4 of IEC 60079-7, the machine or representive sample shall be tested in
accordance with section 6.2.3.2 of IEC 60079-7, or the machine shall be constructed
to allow special measures to be employed to ensure that the enclosure does not
contain an explosive gas atmosphere at the time of starting. The machine instruction
provided, in accordance with IEC 60079-0, shall include on the implementation,
where required, of the additional measures.

c) For Ex e motors rated >1kV, Section 5.2.7 of IEC 60079-7, type tests in accordance
with Section 6.2.3.1 shall be conducted, and the machine shall be fitted with anti-
condensation heaters, and the machine shall be constructed to allow additional
measures to be employed to ensure that its enclosure does not contain an explosive
gas atmosphere at the time of starting. The machine instructions provided, in
accordance with IEC 60079-0, shall include on the implementation, where required,
of additional measures.

(4) Motors for outdoor use shall be suitable for installation and satisfactory operation
without any protective shelter or canopy. Motor casing shall be provided with a
suitable drain for removal of condensed moisture except in case of flameproof
motors.

(5) Vertical motors with downward shaft shall be provided with fully covering rain
canopies. Vertical motors with upward shaft e.g. on fin-fan coolers, shall be
adequately protected, (such as cowls/canopies) against ingress of water into the
enclosure or the bearing housing even when standing still for long periods of time.

(6) Ingress of water through motor shaft/bearing housing shall be prevented using proper
protection

(7) All internal and external metallic parts which may come into contact with cooling air
shall be of corrosion resistant material or appropriately treated to resist the corrosive
agents which may be present in the atmosphere.

2.1.7 Bearings and lubrication

(1) Motors shall have grease-lubricated ball roller / antifriction / sleeve bearings. In all
cases, the bearings shall be chosen to provide a minimum L-10 rating life of 5 years,
(40,000 hours) at rated operating conditions (The L-10 rating life is the number of
hours at constant speed that 90% of a group of identical bearings will complete or
exceed before the first evidence of failure). Unless otherwise specified, the bearing
shall be adequate to absorb axial thrust produced by the motor itself or due to shaft
expansion. Vertical motors shall be provided with thrust bearings suitable for the load
imposed by the driven equipment. In cases such as pumps for hot liquids where the
driven machine operates at high temperatures, bearings shall be cooled by a shaft
mounted fan. This shall ensure efficient ventilation of the bearing and disperse the
heat transmitted from the driven object by conduction or convection.

(2) Bearing shall be capable of grease injection from outside without removal of covers
with motors in the running conditions. The bearing boxes shall be provided with
necessary features to prevent loss of grease or entry of dust or moisture. Where

grease nipples are provided these shall be associated, where necessary, with
appropriately located relief devices, which ensure passage of grease through the
bearing.

2.1.8 Cooling system

All motors shall be self-ventilated, fan cooled. Fans shall be corrosion resistant or
appropriately protected. They shall be suitable for motor rotation in either direction without
affecting the performance of the motor. If this is not possible for large outputs, it shall be
possible to reverse the fan without affecting the balancing of the motor. For motors
operating in hazardous areas, fans shall be of an anti-static non-sparking material.

2.1.9 Rotor

The rotor shall be of squirrel cage type, dynamically balanced to provide a low vibration level
and long service life for the bearings. The accepted values of peak to peak vibration
amplitudes for a motor at rated voltage and speed on a machined surface bedplate with the
motor leveled and with a half-key or coupling fitted shall not exceed those given in IS:
12075. Die cast aluminum rotors for motors in hazardous areas may be accepted provided
the same are type tested and approved by competent authorities.

3.0. Miscellaneous accessories

3.1 Anti condensation heaters

All motors rated above 55kW and above shall be provided with 240V anti-condensation
heaters, sized and located so as to prevent condensation of moisture during shutdown
periods. Motors rated 55kW and below shall be provided with anti-condensation heaters if
specified in the data sheet or required as per vendor design. Motors meant for humid
location such as cooling tower fans, sump pump motors etc. shall be provided with space
heaters irrespective of the motor rating in motor data sheet. The heaters shall be
permanently ‘ON’ when the motor is not in service.

The heater leads shall be brought out to a separate terminal box of the same specification
and grade of protection as the main power terminal box.
A warning label with indelible red inscription shall be provided on the motor to indicate that
the power line and the heater supply shall be isolated before carrying out any work on the
motor.

3.2 Fixing bolts

All motors shall be supplied with fixing bolts.

3.3. Nameplates & markings

(1) Each motor shall have stainless steel or any other non-corrosive metal rating
plates/name plates, fixed to an easily visible, non-removable part of the frame.
Rating plates shall give the information as specified in IEC standards. Additional
nameplate shall be provided to indicate the service and tag no. of each motor.

(2) For motors to be used in explosive gas atmospheres, indication plate shall have
information such as, the type of construction and the explosion grade and ignition

temperature class of gas,

(3) Motor terminals shall be clearly and permanently marked with reference letters in
accordance with the applicable Indian Standards/IEC.

(4) A non-corrosive connection diagram plate shall be fixed to the motors having special
windings or tapings, such as multi-speed motors.

(5) Direction of rotation (R, Y, B) marking plate shall be provided for bi-directional and
uni-directional motors with fixing screws instead of rivets. Direction of rotation shall
be clearly marked by means of an arrow as per actual direction required by driven
equipment. The same information shall be provided (screwing option and not riveted)
on fan cover.

3.4 Shaft extension

Motors shall be provided with a single shaft extension with key-way and full key, motor shaft
shall be sized to withstand 10 times the rated design torque.

3.5 Lifting hook

All motors except for fractional horse power motors shall be provided with lifting hooks of
adequate capacity.

3.6 Earth terminals

(1) Two earth terminals located preferably on diametrically opposite points shall be
provided for each motor. Unless otherwise specified, the size of each earth stud shall
be as given below:

(2) Necessary nuts and spring washers shall be provided for earth connection.
Additional earth terminals shall be provided, inside the terminal box as stated in 2.1.

3.6 PTC thermistors

All LV motors including and above 75kW shall be provided with PTC thermistors.
Three nos. PTC thermistors shall be provided with 2/3 logic for tripping.

4.0 Motor with VSD

4.1 VSD operated motors shall be designed to withstand voltage spikes for at least 1 sec.

4.2 MV motors with VSD application shall have insulated bearing.

4.3 Type of motors that require variable speed drive system shall be suitable for variable speed

range with temperature rise within limit and also shall be suitable for area classification. For
hazardous area application motors with variable speed drive system shall be ex‘d’ type. The
total system i.e. motor including VSD / VVFD shall be type tested as a unit. All motors
operating on VSDs / VVFDs shall have embedded temperature detectors / thermistors for
winding with thermistor relay which will trip the motor in case the temperature of winding
exceeds the permissible limits. Flameproof motors operating on variable speed drive system
shall have CMRI or equivalent authority certifying the suitability of drive motor with VSDs /
VVFDs. For temperature detectors / thermistors 2/3 logic shall be provided for tripping.

5.0. Painting

Internal and external parts of the casing and all metal parts that are likely to come in contact
with the surrounding air shall be protected with anti-acid paint that will resist the particular
ambient condition.

All external surfaces shall be given a coat of epoxy based paint shade of RAL 5024.
A special anti-corrosive paint shall be applied all over for protection against corrosion due to
high humidity at site.

6.0 Inspection and testing

(1) All routine and type tests shall be carried at manufacturer’s works as per attached
inspection and test plan Doc no: IBCE-6373-COO-ELE-ITP-000-0010. The tests
shall be witnessed by Owner / PMC.

(2) Type test certificates for similar type of motor shall be furnished by supplier along
with the offer.

(3) For motors driven by VSD, the total system i.e. motor and VSD shall be type tested,
as a unit.

7.0 Spares & Special Tools

7.1 Erection, testing & Commissioning Spares

These shall be supplied along with the main equipment as per OEM recommendation. The
list shall be submitted by vendor along with offer.

7.2 Special tools and tackles

The special tools and tackles shall be supplied along with the equipment as per OEM
recommendation. The list of the same shall be submitted along with offer.

7.3 Mandatory Spares

Vendor to supply mandatory spares as per tender documents. The same shall be supplied
along with the main equipment.

7.4 Spares for two years normal operation & maintenance

Quotation for two years spares for normal operation and maintenance along with the unit
price shall be provided with offer for client to order same separately.

8.0 Packing and Dispatch

All the equipment may be divided into several sections for protection and ease of
handling during transportation. The equipment shall be properly packed for
transportation by ship/rail or trailer.

“Sea worthy packing” with external lifting arrangement shall be provided.


The equipment may be stored outdoors for long periods before installation. The packing
shall be completely suitable for outdoor storage in areas with heavy rains/high ambient
temperature.

9.0 Deviations

Deviations will not be accepted unless it is technically justified & approved by PMC/Owner.
