Module 1: Definition, Goals, and Scope of Special and Inclusive Education

Since time immemorial, education plays a crucial role in one’s life. Amidst of our
differences, it is vital that one must have the access to a proper and good education. All citizens
have the right to education even those persons with disabilities. Unfortunately, a few centuries
ago, the probability that a disabled person can undergo a formal education is little to none. They
are even seen as mentally ill and placed in a mental institution. It is not until mid-1920s that
educators began to see the value of education and community involvement for individuals with
disabilities. During this time, special classes for disabled individuals were still developing, but
typically offered in large cities only. Nonetheless, this simple development leads to the special
and inclusive education that we have in the present times.

In this module, I have learned that another way to educate children with disabilities is through
“inclusion.” It means to include those who are traditionally excluded. Moreover, special education
began in 1990s and were still developing up until this day. Inclusive education gives all children
a fair chance to go to school and develop the skills they need to thrive in life. Inclusion disregards
the idea that you need to be normal to be part of a community, it embraces a deeper
understanding on our differences and uniqueness. For an instance, a child with disability don’t
need to be normal to receive a proper education because in the first place, it is his right to have
one. Education is an absolute right of all. And for us to have that sense of inclusion, we need to
look holistically on the different sides of being normal. What you think is normal may not be for
others. Its meaning may vary from each person. Furthermore, it is not our own perception of the
norms that binds people with disability and don’t have together, it is due to our respect to each
other that makes us understand our differences and lead us to an environment where no one is
excluded.

In conclusion, the moment we abandon the idea that children must be normal in order to
receive a proper education, we begin to realize the significance of education and community
involvement for individuals with disabilities and the achievable goal of providing all children with
an authentic sense of belonging. Thus, this will ensure their rights to quality education and
outcomes.
